Hair Loss and Bumps on Back

Ced (2 1/2) has been having a problem for the last six weeks.

He's been getting bumps on his back that looks like warts but eventually they just flake off and leave normal skin underneath. As well he's shedding like mad on his back and probably has about 1/3 of his hair left (back only). It started near his tail and has been moving towards his neck. He has a lot of dandruff as well. He dosen't scratch or rub at his back so it isn't ichy.

The vet found no parasites and said the "bumps" look to be plugged hair folicals. They are having us add Omega 3 and 6 oils to his food (he's eaten Royal Canin for at least a year, probably longer) for the next month or two to see if that corrects things but they say they're not sure what's wrong.

Any other ideas as to what's wrong or what I can do?

Changing to a better food would be a good start. Royal Canine is really not very good. You can check out different foods at: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble Ideally you should be feeding at least a 4 or 5 star food.

Good luck!

I know there are better foods but he had digestive issues as a puppy and this was one of the few foods that didn't give him explosive diarrhea. Orjin was one of the other foods he could handle.

Hair loss could be seasonal alopecia. My girl always starting getting it when Spring rolled around. Harmless, just looks terrible. I always felt like the worst doggie mama when people would comment on it. You could suggest that and see what they say. Very common in boxers.

I'm with Jan. A new food is definitely in order, too. Royal Canin is pricey anyway, so you're already prepared for the good stuff! ;)
