My Lucy has bad anal gland function due to her HUC and having watery blood stools for so long. My vet recommends pumpkin 4-5 times a week. Its fiber so will bulk up the stool and help express the anal glands. I can always tell when I haven't given her enough. It's also an excellent antioxident. Also I've heard that if you shave sweet potatoes and feed raw in thin slices it can help. As for chicken backs, what if you bashed them with a hammer first before feeding to make sure all the bones are crushed? We've done that lots!

Thanks Sheryl, you are giving me more hope about the pumpkin. I think I will try that next! He had oatmeal last night and his stool this morning was much better but still not quite what I would call 'solid'. I could give more oatmeal probably but that would mean less real food. Pumpkin in small doses if it works would be much better.

And why do I never think of the obvious like bashing bones up with a hammer?! That's a super idea and no grinder outlay required. Haha! THANK YOU! :)

Just wanted to come back and say, all you pumpkin pushers are absolutely correct! I don't know why it works but it does. THANK YOU! :D
