Growth on her head.

Stella has a bump on top of her head. She's had it ever since I got her at 9 weeks old. It looked like a little scar when I first got her, but it has gotten bigger and bigger as she gets older. It's currently a bit little bigger than a pencil eraser. The vet said it's nothing to worry about (and he called it something - can't remember what), but that he'd have to put her under to surgically remove it. It doesn't pus or bleed, it's under the surface of her skin. Should I be worried or is this common?

We have the same type of bump

Hi,
We just had Chloe to the vet for the same thing. She is 17 months old now but when she was just a small pup she jumped up under my kitchen table and banged her head. She had a very small scab there for a few days and then it was a scar. Recently the scar turned into a bump as you described. I called the vet and they said since she was coming in for her check up in a few weeks to just wait because this is common in Boxers. At the vet visit they did a test( they squeezed the bump and then stuck a needle in and drew out some gunkish yellow fluid). Chloe never even winced, the vet said they are usually not painful.
The test came back benign so the vet said leave it because it may go away on its own but the surgery to remove it is more dangerous than leaving it there.
So now we can call her "Knot Head" .
It sounds like the same thing you have so I wouldn't worry too much.

Perhaps your vet was referring to a benign growth called a histiocytoma. ~ Cathy

My white boxer had one on her head also. We had it removed when she had her ears cropped. My suggestion is to have it removed when she is spayed...assuming you do it. It will keep growing, I think, if I remember correctly. It (if the same thing) is benign.

That's what it was called!!! Unfortunately Stella's already been spayed...but the vet said that if she ever has be put under for anything else, like getting her teeth cleaned, they'll remove it then. It's rather unsightly, but as long as it's not hurting her, I'm not going to risk having them put her under. Thanks for the follow-up! Does anyone know what causes it? Trauma?
