My Kobe is almost 3 years old and the sweetest dog ever. He is a very nervous dog but has never been anything but loving to myself and my daughter. The only thing that worries me a little is that sometimes he will growl at me when I tell him to stop doing something, tell him to sit, etc. He always listens to me but growls when he does it. Anyone know why he growls even though he listens to me at the same time?

 I call that back-chatting. Rogue does it all the time - She is so mouthy. She always has to have the last word, even though she too does what she is told, it still has to be done with something to say about it. :D

Payton does the same thing also- but he has never "growled" at me. It's always a wierd, mouthy, whiney, sometimes woo-wooey sound that comes from him. He mostly does it when he's not happy about the way something is being done around him. silly dog! :)

Thank you so much. I feel much better now. I just had an incident with him at a horrible vet that I will never go back to and they have made me sick with worry that my dog somehow has an aggression problem that I have never seen. Then I started thinking about when he growls at me when I tell him to do things but it is much more of the "woo-woo" thing. He starts out growling but always ends up with a mixture of the growl, whine, woo-woo stuff. I always thought it was funny but the vet apparently made me worry over nothing.

Carson is ALWAYS sassing me! He ALWAYS has to get the last "word" in. He does it to everyone! If you talk to him, even if you aren't disiplining him just a friendly hello carson, he comes back with a growling sounding "chatter". My best friend told me I better get a handle on him since he's so aggressive :)eek:) and growling at her! I told her he was just talking. She insisited she knew when a dog was growling. I didn't care to have a battle with her about it and let it go. Not long afterward, something starteled both dogs (hair stood up on their backs, tails erect, looking out the window)..both let out very obvious warning growls directed toward the "intruder" that was outside, poor squirell, THAT I told her was a growl..the other noise he makes is him striking up a conversation with you. She agreed and allowed the back talk from Carsy..

Grumpy does the back-talk too. . . my husband HATES it & won't reward a sit, down, etc, if she grumbles while she does it. Me, I think it's funny. . . She doesn't do it all the time, and she always does as she's told despite the grumbling. Sometimes she will try to woo-woo and play-growl before giving in & doing what's asked of her - kind of like, But Mom, do I really have too?

And she will also talk if you walk in on her doing something she knows is wrong, like digging on the couch - trying to say that it's not what it looks like, there's a perfectly reasonable explanation if Mom would only just listen for once!

Boxers are so human-like it is crazy! Neva back talks sometimes as well. Hubby thinks it is fresh and disobedient and gets mad at her for it. Being the true Boxer that she is, Neva gets louder. We are working on curbing this behavior and she has gotten much better. Now when she gets a bit out of hand, I put a finger to my lips and she stops. Hesitantly I might add. To let her get the chatting out of her system I have conversations with her throughout the day. I say "talk to me" and there she goes. Her lips kill me!

Jada growls with her toys and other puppies when she's playing. She's always been very vocal. When we tell her do to a command, thats when we get the big sighs. "Like, do I have to" they are so funny.
