When giving Sonny a tummy rub the other night, I noticed that he had a very strong 'poopy' odor coming from his neitherregions. He had just been bathed two days prior.

This morning as I was cuddling him, the 'poopy-stinky' odor was there again. These aren't boxer farts, this is just like... what humans smell like when they haven't bathed in a week or so 'down there'. Andy and him both seem to lick at his tail and bum a lot. Sometimes there's dried crusty stuff caught in the hair around his penis.

I am sorry to ask this question, but Andy has never had an odor like this and I am unsure if just maybe it's to do with the change of food or something else. Is this normal though? Anyone have any idea what this might be?

Thank you.

it could be his anel glands. when they are clogged they really smell bad. IMO I would take him to the vets to see if that is it. if it is the vet will express them. if not taken care of they could get absessed.

Lars has done this on occasion. We officially call it "fishy butt." I think the anal glands express that usually when defecating or peeing. In my baby's case, he might express them when scared or sometimes when playing and sometimes when he is licking a little aggressively at the behind. We went through a spell where it happened quite a bit and took him in, but everything checked out fine. My vet said that some dogs will do this. But, this doesn't mean this is your baby. Take him in to ease your mind. It is a smelly, smelly thing. :)

Does he ever "scoot" his butt across the floor? A friend's very overweight dog does this to try and express her clogged anal glands (confirmed per her Vet) as the dog's weight problem interferes with them draining naturally (and she certainly can't reach her butt to lick anything down there to clean herself... waaaaay too fat for that maneuver!)
Could the smell indicate an infection has already set in somewhere in that region?

I've never seen a scoot ever, and bear in mind Sonny is on the nearly-underweight side of normal. He does lick his bottom though, I am wondering if maybe getting proper nutrition, clean water, adequate rest and play is causing them to express a bit more to get rid of anything that may have been in there.

He's on an antibiotic currently due to his neutering and a skin infection.

I think I will wait until I've finished the antib. and if I still smell it I will take him in.

Could it possible be the antibiotic he is excreting? Have you ever noticed that when you are on an antibiotic and you excrete it has a funny smell.

Do you feed him plain yogurt? I have read that antibiotics destroy the good bacteria boxers normally have for digestion. Adding a tbsp. or so of plain yogurt to his food will help replace that missing bacteria. I don't know if it will decrease the odor, but it will add to his overall health either way.
