Greetings All,

I have been around Yellow Labs most of my life until just a few years ago. The last few years I've been reading about he boxer to see if this breed would be the right one for us. Everything I have read seemed right, energetic, good with children, smart, easy to train, etc. Last week we found a local breeder and picked out a 4wk. flashy brindle male, we're so excited, he can come home in a couple of weeks.

However, one of my kids brought home a book about boxers, in that book it says they should never be left alone near strangers as the boxer can be unpredictable with strangers. Now all the reading I did that was the first time I seen this. Most other things I read said they MAY be weary of strangers but they wouldn't attack, they would only hold at bay if they thought something was up.

Should this be something I really should worry about? I never needed to worry about this with the Labs, they greeted strangers as if they known them all their life.

I have been reading boxerworld for just a few months and the information that is posted by the members is going to be a valuable tool. Its really interesting reading how everyone here loves the boxer so much.

Again, we can wait to get ours home!

Hi, Welcome to Boxerworld!! :) I bet you are going to enjoy your puppy once your boy gets home with ya'll!!

I have never in my life had a problem with Asia when it comes to strangers. I have read that they can be very wary of strangers, but I have never seen it, in any of the Boxers I have been around. Asia is actually too trusting of strangers; as soon as we get near any person, that she knows or doesn't know, her butt starts to kidney bean and she starts walking sideways because she's so excited! I don't think it is something you should worry about; just keep your pup well socialized around people and other dogs and I'm positive he will be just fine! :)

Welcome to Boxerworld!!

I think any dog can be 'unpredictible' around strangers, not just boxers. That's why it's so important to purchase your puppy through a reputable breeder who breeds to better the breed and who also breeds for good temperament. Especially in the bigger breeds who are often put in the 'hot seat' because of the unethical breeders out there.

It's also very important to get socialization in at an early age. When your puppy is young you should try to introduce him to many new people, animals, sights, and sounds. Of course, this should be done with his safety being the number one priority. This will have a very positive impact on her as she grows. She'll be more confident and willing to accept new people and situations.

Here is a good link that will help you to prepare for the first year of your puppy's life. It's a breakdown on the different phases that he will go through.

Congrats on your new pup! :)

Welcome to BW..

I also have never had a problem with any of my babies being aggressive toward someone they don't know. Actually it's been quite the opposite for me. Mine have always wanted to meet everybody they thought whoever was coming for a visit was coming to see them. When my kids have their friends over both Brandy and Abigail have always wanted to be right in the middle. Once or twice Abigail being she is only a year old would tend to stand behind me and take her leads from me. But once she realized I was ok with whoever it was then she was fine with them ..

I think boxers are especially wonderful with small kids, its like they understand they have to be very careful with them.. Any dog can show aggressiveness but I truely believe its all in the way they have been raised.

Welcome to Boxerworld! Congratulations on picking out your new puppy. We have boxers and a Lab (Chocolate) also. The boxers act no different around strangers than our Lab does. The boxers seem to want more attention, therfore they seem to be more hyper. But we have never had any problems with them being aggresive towards strangers.

Good luck and keep looking around the site for info. This is a great website!

Socialization is the key...it does need to start when they are young. The thing that no one reminds you is that it needs to continue! Just because you socialized your puppy, doesn't mean you're done!! I have found that the more people I keep my 2 1/2 year old in contact with, the better she handles it. I noticed this from having been in the house for a cold winter when no one was around. It took a little while for Amber to remember that people are ok once the warm weather hit again.

The other thing you need to know is that people who are not familiar with the boxer breed can be pretty intimidated by them. The looks of the boxer are quite deceiving. I have had people walking in my sub who will cross the street when they see her out in the yard. I have also had a yard sale where she was off leash, and bothered no one. She sniffed a couple of people, but wasn't aggressive at all. If people didn't look at her, she did not pay much attention to them. But still, there were those who were apprehensive about approaching the yard. You can totally tell which people have loved a boxer before....they seem to know that inside these dogs are just goofy, fun-loving animals.

Good luck, you're going to LOVE your boxer!!!
