Hello everyone.
I just found this board today and it sure looks like a good resource for us. I thought it might be appropriate to introduce myself and give you helpful people a little background information.
My wife and I, along with my 20 year old stepdaughter, live on a 40 acre horse farm just outside of Springfield Illinois. A few months ago, our nearly 17 year old Border Collie, who had been in good health, died. He was a great dog. His favorite way to entertain himself was to "herd" the horses, who mostly ignored him, but he liked it. At first we though we wouldn't get another dog but we really miss having a dog welcome us home and follow us around as we do chores. So, I guess you could say, we are starting to look for a dog who will be happy with our situation and us happy with him. A boxer is the breed we are mostly interested in, but we want to educate ourselves about the breed first.
We are looking for an inside dog. One who doesn't shed much. One who would like to follow us around outside and who likes to go for rides. The reason we are intrigued by the Boxer breed is because we have a friend who has one. He is a great dog. The interesting thing about him is when someone walks up to the house, he will raise holy hell. Seems like he wants to tear them up. But as soon as his owner lets this person in the house, the dog becomes their best friend. We never go over to his house without the dog doing something goofy that gets us to laughing. Having this dog in the car when you go through an automatic car wash, for example, defies words.
I imagine that I will be primarily responsible for the training of the dog and I do have some experience with it. In the past, I owned a couple of APBT's. I lost them in my divorce. I loved the breed and only bought them after doing extensive research, much as I am trying to do now. The only reason we aren't looking at that breed now is because of the objections of the wife and step daughter. Some battles aren't worth fighting, a lesson that did not come quickly to me.
Sorry for the lengthy introduction. I am very much looking forward to getting to know everyone here and appreciate your assistance in helping us decide if the Boxer breed is the breed for us.
