The funniest thing in the world is when Teagan is sniffing the ground and walking at the same time. Her whole body does something completely different. Her butt waddles differently and her stance is wider. It cracks me up to watch her from behind!! I just love her so much!!

they are louder than usual as well!! and you can tell when they do a "double-take." they go over the same spot twice or three times just to make sure. know what i mean?

someone once posted on here that on halloween their boxer picked up the scent of someone under a pile of leaves and they thought nothing of it until that person popped out and scared the crap out of them. i thought that was hilarious.

That was me! :) They definitely have a good nose, it's just a matter of making them understand what you want them to look for. I belong to an on-line group that focuses on training boxers for obedience and there are many members on there that also do tracking with their boxers. They seem to do well.

Gee, I wasn't expecting to get so many responses. It's great to see so many people interested in this subject. My husband swears that Ali would make an excellent drug dog. She is so in tune to picking up on different scents. When she runs with my friends' dog Brooke (rottie cross) there is no comparison when it comes to hunting instincts. Brooke isn't the least bit interested whereas Ali is constantly with her nose to the ground. One day she picked up the trail of a fox. I saw the fox before she did and was able to get her to come to me. From what I've seen with Ali I am convinced boxers can be very versatile dogs. I'm surprised that more of them are not used for sniffing out drugs, etc.

Ya know now that you all bring this up, when I take my Buddy to the park across the street his nose would be sweeping that grass and sure enough he would find a damn chicken bone, and if there was a cat hiding in the brush and high grass in the back yard, without warning I'd be nose diving to the dirt, and some poor cat would be hissing, snarling and would finally get away, sqirrells too, He gets everyone roaring at the club with his antics:LOL: I wouldn't be surprised if he at least climbed halfway someday with those paws.

Well I did finally get to take J.C. pheasant hunting last Friday and Saturday. Friday he did manage to sniff out and scare up three pheasants, too bad they were all hens. Shortly after that, a rooster got up. My bird recognition skills are a little rusty, so by the time I was sure it was a rooster and took a shot, it was too far away and I didn't get it. Saturday we didn't see any pheasants at all. It was fun to watch him work at trailing a scent. Too bad he didn't get to put any of his retrieving training to good use.

We were wondering about training Monkey to flush birds as well because she's got such a sensitive nose when we're hunting for other animals that whenever she starts sniffing a lot we always seem to find some track of some sort. She's also got a really gentle mouth as well, which is important for a birding dog who retrieves.
I may try to see if we can get her a little more into it next season :)

Indie is always sniffing the house out, nose is on the go all the time. When me and stan (boyfriend) are home, we get Indie to look for one another and praise her when she dose, it's funny to see, we do it on walks as well. she would make a good hunting dog, just think she is nosey though! haha

Mya, my 3 year old female loves to hunt. Usually she is limited to whatever critter finds its way into the yard. She has 2 squirells, 2 small birds, and a 4ft water snake in her trophy collection thus far. The snake was by far the scariest, but she was MUCH faster than the snake. Before I couldget over to stop her she had dodged a strike attempt and grabbed the snake right behind head and killed it. I was shocked!

She also loves to go with me and my buddies when we shoot skeet. She is not gun shy at all and loves to chase the skeet as they come out of the thrower. She still hasn't figured out why some of them disappear in mid air though. She just looks back at me with an expression like, "what happened? Where did it go?" It is too funny!
