Boxers certainly carried over the hunting trait from their ancestors. We take Ali up in the country and let her run on the trails. She constantly has her nose on the ground picking up rabbit trails and chasing grouse (a wild bird about the size of a chicken). Anyway, my husband decided to test her instincts out last week. He caught a glimpse of a grouse in the woods and called her to him and told her to go get it. She put her nose down and away she went. She picked up on its trail and in a few seconds the bird was out of the woods and flying over our heads. That's exactly what hunting dogs do so the hunter can shoot the bird. We praised her up and gave her a treat. I'm sure they would make excellent hunters if trained to do so. Boxers are so versatile you can't help but love them.

There's not a doubt in my mind about them being great hunting dogs if trained to do so. They are so intelligent, actually I tell Jesse all the time that she's to smart for her own good. Her favorite thing to chase is squirrels, she loves running them up trees and then she sits at the bottom looking up barking.

J.C. has been trained to hunt. Unfortunately I have not been able to take him hunting yet so I cannot tell you how well he does. :( Most of his training involved retrieving birds so I do plan on taking him pheasant hunting as soon as I get a chance.

And jumping up on the tree! I swear one day she is going to climb that tree and get that squirrel!

Super Boxer
At times Lisa looks like a pointer the way she stands and yes she snorts.

I grew up being around Pointers, since my Dad used to raise them and he enjoyed going Quail hunting a lot. Anyway, I know what you're talking about. There have been times when I've been watching ABBY, and she'll be running around in the backyard with her nose low to the ground, then suddenly stop. Whatever she has picked up the scent of, I have no idea. But, she will assume the perfect stance, just like that of a bird dog. Well, except that of a bird dog with a stubby tail. If my Dad were only here to see her, he'd be so proud.

someone once posted on here that on halloween their boxer picked up the scent of someone under a pile of leaves and they thought nothing of it until that person popped out and scared the crap out of them. i thought that was hilarious.

Zeus learned how to be a "cowdog" when i was married. He saw the blue/red heelers going after the steer when we would team rope. It is pretty funny to watch heelers and one boxer going after the steers down the arena.

They are a very verstile dog. i just wish he would go in the water more.
