Harry and I go running every morning for about 45 minutes and then we go to this grassy, wide open area to play with the tennis ball. Well, Harry gets distracted and starts eating grass. I know that dogs will do this if they have an upset tummy but everyday! He is in good health, no diarhhea (sp?) or throwing up even after he eats the grass. Why is he doing this and how can I get him to stop? I have tried giving him the tennis ball as an alternative and he will take it, drop it, then eat grass again. Suggestions?

Some dogs are just part cow!

Markus madly eats grass in the spring, Not so much the rest of the year. Then he usually eats grass when he has a rumbly tummy and he usually throws up.

Well I am by far not a nutrition expert but, I could be possible that the food you are feeding him is lacking in a nutrient that he is trying to get by eating the grass. As far as getting him to stop you could try a slight correction when he does it. Although i don't think that eating the grass would be of any harm to him unless it contained a fertilizer or other chemical. Another suggestion would be to find a different area to play ball in that does not have any grass. Hope this helps.

I feed him Canidae which I have been really pleased with and he seems to love it. I do offer a slight correction by giving him the tennis ball instead of letting him put grass in his mouth. And unfortunately for my fur baby that eats grass, Alabama is full of green, green grass. I would like to correct the problem and not avoid it because he goes to daycare, where there is lots of grass, and I hope he plays and does not eat grass. I guess I thought I was buying a boxer, but in actuality, I bought a cow. lol.

Well I guess Forrest Gump was right. You never know what you gonna get. lol. Well one thing I do know about training away a bad habit is if you don't correct him every time you catch him it's going to be very hard to break. That goes for while he's at day care as well. If he gets away with it there he'll think he can get away with it anytime. Well good luck!

Luka knows No very well, but no amount of saying No will make him stop eating leaves. He is totally obsessed with eating them. We also have Redwood trees- they have pine needles sort of- he likes these too. I can't get him to stop. Finanlly, after a month, I've just given up. I feed Chicken Soup, so it can't be a deficiency. Silly dog. Several times he'll look at me with a leaf stuck to his nose. It is so anoying- but when the leaf is stuck to his nose, I just have to laugh (I try not to tho :)
