Luke, my granddog, broke a toe on his hind leg. The vet took x-rays and determined that it was broken. He put a cast and splint on Luke's leg last Thursday. My daughter had to take him back to the vet today since the cast was causing an irritation spot on his leg. The vet took the cast off and told her that sometimes casts work and sometimes they don't, so now he thinks it will heal naturally. My daughter is upset since she had to pay for the x-rays and cast only to be told that it will heal naturally since the cast had to be removed. I think that the vet should refund some of the money she paid, since this was expensive and the treatment didn't work. Any suggestions on how she should approach the vet about this?

First I'm sorry about Luke, poor baby...second I believe the vet should refund or credit some of the expense, my vet certainly would..give slobbery kisses to Luke from us for a speedy recovery...

Weeeell, I think this could go either way. It is kind of like going to the doctor for an infection, getting an antibiotic and it not working. I don't think you could get the doctor/pharmacy to refund.

BUT, I do think that if the vet thought it could possibly heal naturally, he should have brought up that alternative in the first place, and given your daughter the option of choosing. Then at least if she had chosen the cast, he had offered both methods.

I would definitely recommend being calm about it, and explain precisely why you feel a refund is due, and see where it gets you. Good luck, and I hope the granddog feels better soon!

Thanks for all your input. I think my daughter is going to talk to the vet and see if she can get a credit. Luke is doing fine without the cast. It's really hard trying to keep him from running. Being 6 months old, he does have lots of energy. His toe looks much better. He is not limping and dosen't seem to be in any pain.

Thanks for the well wishes and the good vibes.
