can anyone recommend a more natural way to treat tyson for his cold? i have an appt. with the vet on thursday and i just know they're going to give him antibiotics but his immune system is already down from getting over demodex (getting prescribed antibiotics and taking ivermectin everyday for a month) and i don't want to feed him any more pills! i know that it's important to give him the meds to prevent the possibility of pnemonia but does anyone know of a better option? right now his symptoms are a greenish/yellowish snotty nose and a little congestion. we've been steaming him and patting his chest the past couple days which has cleared up his congestion and he only coughed for one night. he's still eating/drinking normally, a bit more lethargic than normal, but that doesn't say much cuz he's such a lazy dog anyway! i'm giving him vitamin c pills everyday to help with his immune system. i know there's gotta be a more natural (and cheaper than a bunch of money spent on meds at the vet) to make him better!

How much Vitamin C are you giving? Cami is just under 60lbs and she gets 125mg 2 times per day. When she has the sniffles I upped that amount to 250mg 2 times per day. I also fed her a few extra orange and apple pieces for a few days and also gave her some low sodium chicken broth a few times a day for 3-4 days. The sniffles went away before an infection set in. Don't know if what I did helped but I know it didn't hurt. I also kept her inside except for bathroom duties.....it's really cold here now.

The green snot definitly means infection has already set in. How thick is the discharge and how frequent is it?

You could make a sort of tea with lemons and ginger and water and give a few tablespoons of that like twice a day. You can also give some honey to help the coughing and sore throat.

You can also make his own batch of chicken noodle soup which always helps colds. Just minus the onions but everything else would be the same. :)

thanks for the advice! tyson is 55 lbs and getting 250mg/twice a day (vit.c). i will definately try the ginger/lemon tea. i don't know why i didn't think of that! my mom is asian and swears by it! i will try the chicken broth as well, we have a bunch of that sitting around.

as far as the discharge goes, it's not as thick as his eyeboogies can be...what is coming out of his nose looks exactly like what would come out of our noses if we had no control during a bad cold! he usually gets the snottiest when we go out to go potty (he's staying in for now until he recovers!). i don't know if the whether change has anything to do with it. it's san diego, but can get pretty chilly! his nose is a bit runny in the house and gets really snotty to the point i have to wipe his nose maybe 3-4 times a day. well, hope i explained the frequency and thickness alright! should i be really worried?

In my experience the frequency of the discharge and the thickness indicates how much infection there actually is. So if it's still pretty thin and you are only wiping his nose about 3times in a whole day I would say it's beginning stages. :) Hopefully he will get over it quickly!
