Gooey Discharge after Urination

Our 4-month old female has had some yellowish, gooey discharge "hanging around" after urination recently. Not very much, just a little bit. Is this a sign of a urinary tract infection? One of our other theories was that she may be beginning to enter adulthood? What age do boxers usually start coming into heat? We have a vet visit lined up for next week for another round of shots so we were going to bring it up then, but I thought I'd ask for any ideas before we go.

It's probably nothing to worry about - most dogs (male and female) have a little bit of yellowish 'goo' hanging around after urination. Can't hurt to have a vet check her over though, excessive 'goo' can be a sign of a UTI.

As for when she'll come into heat - well that really varies. The 'normal' range is anywhere from about 7 months to 2 years. That's one reason 6 months is such a good time to spay - most boxer females won't have their first heat until after that time, so you can get in before it happens. That's not foolproof, of course. There was a thread here once about a puppy that I think was only 4-5 months old - and she was having her first heat. Unusual, but not impossible ;)

I have noticed my little lucy has a little drop hanging after peeing. She is fine. I just take it as a sign that I know that she really did pee when she went outside. haha

It sounds like it is vaginitis, seeing as you have a female. Your vet will likely take a swab and test for this. It is very common for puppies to get this. It can be treated with antibiotics or your vet may recommend that your puppy go through one heat cycle. We are currently dealing with this issue. Let me know what happens.

Hi,

I had this with Daisy. I tried 2 different antibiotics and then I saw a different vet. She suggested that I wait until after Daisy was spayed - that she'd seen this clear up after spaying. I had her spayed at 5 1/2 months and sure enough it cleared up not long after that.

Good luck!

Hi
You are lucky if vaginitis cleared up after speying. Mine still takes it periodically. However we keep it under control by using Canesten cream every day in that area.
Plus she gets a Cranberry capsule, Celery Seed [tablet form] and Royal Jelly as supplements.
