good news/bad news!

well. last night a good thing happened for the first time. i got up to go to the loo in the night (abotu 5am) bailey sleeps in his bad on the landing between our bedroom door and bathroom door. i didnt turn on the light so that i wouldnt wake him (mad or normal?) so it was pretty dark. next thing he started doing this mad deep growl ive never heard him do before. it developed into a definate warning bark. i quickly let him know it was me but i was so impressed to see his gaurding us! hes never shown any signs of it before!! not that i want him as a guard dog, but its good to know hes gonna let us know if someting strange is going on durin the night
the bad news is...
today my dh phones me to tell me that hes come home to find one of my brand new nike shox that i paid £120 for has been munched. its my fault i know. im always so careful about leaving stuff about but i guess i missed them this morning. i only got them like a month ago cos i wrecked my others dog walking (or should i say swamping). apart from the damage they are SOOO wet. i reckon he was chewing them all day!! its always my stuff he eats never dh's. WWHHYYYY?? what have i done? im the chief!!!
(still love him tho)
i put them on the floor and let him go for them a few times so i could scold him in the act. no point. he knows anyway!! thats why it was so mkuch fun i guess!!!

My boxer baby, ( 18 months ), still hasn't sounded the guarding alarm at night. I often sneak into bed long after my wife and the dogs are fast asleep. I don't turn the light on and carefully prepare for bed in the dark. I have been somewhat concerned that Daisy may come into her guarding instinct on one of these late, dark evenings. I wonder if she doesn't half awaken and know it is me wondering around the room in the dark?

Also, never mind the shoes... my boxer baby ate my leather sofa one day while I was at work. ( In those days I believed dog crates were cruel... not anymore ).

Maybe she is just used to you doing it and would sound the alarm if it was someone else?
How old is Bailey? I think it is great that you have a grand protector now! I hope my Cisco will be the same way!

brandy 21mths has gone into guard dog mode a few times - once when she was about 12mths - hubby was away for work for a few nights and she was up patroling the house every 2 hours - mummy didn't get much sleep becuase brandy wanted to patrol outside as well. another time she was still quite young and the man next door was putting his bins out - it was about midnight and i hear the low low growl then she was off to the front window in the lounge room barking her head off, another time we had 4 friends staying and we'd been up till 2am- me and 3am - hubby and dogs, anyway brandy needed to go out about 6am so i get up to let her out and keep her quite all the lights were still on and here's friends b/friend sitting out in the outdoor entertaining area - to much to drink they couldn't wake him to go to bed - silly boy anyway i'm alot slower than miss brandy and as i get near her i hear the growl and looked out to see friend then she starting barking like mad protecting her mummy hehehe so cute - mind you she didn't wake him with the barking and it was loud - i woke him when i moved my good cyrstal glass away from the edge of the table - i thought it was funny the dog could bark as much as she liked and not wake him but touch his glass of bourbon and he was awake in a flash.

Most all boxers I have ever known have 2 sides, the sweet, gentle lovable side, and the aggressive, vicious guard dog side. That is what makes boxers the ultimate dog to have. They are gentle as can be with babies and children, yet can viciously protect you and your family when you are threatened. My house has had 2 attempted burglaries. Once, somebody tried to slit the screen in a window in back of the house. Rusty became so upset, he actually bowed out the screen in the opposing window, and it stopped the villians. Another time, after I got an alarm system, 3 burglars tried to kick in and crawl through a basement window, and the alarm malfunctioned. Rusty was the one who stopped them. I only have seen Rusty in this mode one time, I was taking a nap upstairs, and all of a sudden he was barking, not his normal bark, but an evil, aggressive, threatening bark. I had never heard it before. When I woke up to take a look, I saw the UPS man delivering a package. All of my dogs hate him, and I think he has done something to them to make them so angry. My brother had a boxer named Charlie, one of the gentlest animals I know. I used to go in my brother's house, and Charlie would be crashed on the waterbed, not a care in the world. But, one night, my brother locked his keys in his house, and had to crawl through a window in the back porch. Charlie, thinking it was a burglar, dove through the glass on the back door to meet my brother. Thank God, neither Charlie nor my brother was hurt. But, it just goes to show you the protective nature of these magnificent dogs!!!!

he actually did it again last night! shortly after we went to bed the woman next door slammed a door in her house and as we were silent, we could hear it. its like a really deep rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrruf i love it! its like hes letting us know something strange is happening! we were all upstairs in bed..him in his bed on the landing, but he had to get up and go down prowliing around downstairs for a while to make sure all was normal! after a few mins he came back upstairs and flopped down on his bed!!
im so gonna freak out everytime he does it now!! i was standing in the hall talking to him earlier and he started getting on all wierd like someone was about to come thru the door behind me.. i kacked myself and jumped out of the way..my heart was pounding!! i realised he'd been seeing my reflection the the glass of the front door!!1
hes almost 10 months old now.

Oscar loves to lay in our living room and look out the front window. Recently he has started to growl anytime someone comes up the driveway or to the door. We always tell him he's a good boy.

I swear Bugzy hears everything and has been a great watch dog since day one. His sister on the other hand who happens to belong to my friend has no guarding instincts at all. They're only nine months though so she might change. I would love em no matter what!
