I think it is personality as well. I have two females and they don't fight or anything. They love each other so much and play and kiss, clean each other and sleep with each other, etc., etc. Sure, there were dominance issues when I first brought Susie home (an older rescue - Maggie is 10 mo. old), but they dogs worked those out for themselves and they aren't issues anymore. I do think that whatever sexes you get, all should be neutered/spayed. That helps with some of the aggressiveness issues.
My personal opinion is that females are more dominant than males and in most m/f households, the female rules the roost. Susie has taken the more Alpha role in our house, but that seems fine for Maggie. She accepts her role and knows that both of them are loved and get the same kisses and play and toys and food and affection from their daddy, so who cares who goes out the door first.
Good luck.
