I live in California but am purchasing a home around the Lake Norman Area in North Carolina in August. I had a boxer from the time I was born until I was 13, at which time she went to doggy heaven. I have never gotten over the loss of my beloved LadyBug. I have been wanting another boxer ever since. Now that I will be in a position to get the boxers that I want, my question is, what is a good combination i.e. Female/Female, Male/Male, or Male/Female? I will most certainly have them fixed so the Male/Female combination would not be a problem. I just wonder if there is a consensus on which combination is better. Also, do you think 2 from the same litter would be better? Thanks so much in advance.

I ahve a male/ female combination and my female is always trying to dominate my male. I really prefer all males since they will be neutered they would be an excellent combo. The female/female might work out alright if one or both are not dominating. It's really your preference if you get them at a young age any of those combinations should work out fine.

From what I've heard, and my limited experience, I think it depends more on the dog's personality. You don't want two dominant dogs (whether same sex or opposite).
I have heard horror stories about same sex dogs (especially from the same litter). The worst seem to be 2 females together.
In general, an opposite sex pair will be more likely to get along. Of course, there are exceptions and lots of people with same sex pairs that get along great.
I think you'd have to look at the whole picture--the dogs' ages, personality, past experiences.

A quick 2 cents- It seems that there are a lot of "pairs" of boxers in the rescues too. At the Northeast rescue there are/were two gorgeous girls looking for homes-

Happy move!I have heard from many boxer owners that same sexes put together tend to get too agressive. But I don't believe it, I think no matter what if you get 2 dogs, one is going to try and dominate the other, it is their nature. I would get a female and a male, just becuase it mixes things up. But it just all depends on you. I hope it works out for you. I vacationed to North Carolina last summer and it was gorgeous. Good luck!

Yes! wtcnudo my min pin gets along excellent with the boxers. I had the min pin first and he's very well socialized I took him everywhere as puppy so he wouldn't be one of those yappy little dogs. The boxers were just 8 weeks old when I got them so they have grown up around him and they have learned to respect that he's considerably smaller than them and they shouldn't play as rough with him as they do each other. I do keep a close eye on them while they're playing so things don't get out of hand and I never leave them alone together. As a matter of fact he thinks he a boxer also and will get up on his hind legs and try to box. It's also a really cute combination when you take them places together.

I have only ever owned female boxers, so don't know how mixing the sexes works. However, I had heard horror stories about two females together and the possibility of them fighting to the death. At one time, I had 4 female boxers in the house at the same time and they simply loved one another! You do have to watch the dominance issue whatever your decision as far as sex goes. My present 3 boxers are littermates that I have had from birth; they get into a lot of scraps when they are playing but have never given each other scars or even caused someone else to bleed! They kind of take turns as to who is the "top dog" of the day - it can change every day and they all take turns. It really is your preferrence as to the sex; whatever you choose, they can get along well together (and that includes any other breed you also want to introduce). Good luck to you with the move and finally getting a boxer or two again! Funny your old one was LadyBug - that was a term of endearment for my old girl Lady!

I've heard that littermates are a bad idea, but I'm not sure of the reason.
My male was about 6 months old when I brought my female home as a young pup. They've gotten along famously for all of their six years. The female was initially dominant (she has a more fiesty personality), but over the years, the male became dominant. They had a skirmish here and there over food, but quickly settled things. They're a very happy pair!
My female was spayed at a pretty young age, and my male has been intact....until TOMORROW!!!! :eek:

A lot depends on personality. Two domiant dogs are more apt to fight regardless of the sex. In general Male/Female seems to work best. Female/Female has the most issues. There are of course exceptions to ever rule though.
