We had a good friend die while being boarded with a vet in Houston, Texas USA. We are looking for a competent vet who can care for our Boxer Boy, Gunnar. He is special and despite raising Boxers in various parts of the USA, not all vets are the same.

A good vet is a treasure!

I like the one I've just started using. I found them from a "best in town" annual survey, then asked everyone I talked to. All comments were positive, and so far, so good. Other vets I've used either talked to me like I was a kindergartner, or didn't explain things at all, or I couldn't get appointments for weeks, or I had heard bad stories. (The university hospital charges WAY too much.) You might see if anything like that survey is available in your area...

Check with the Boxer Clubs, Boxer Rescue, and Boxer breeders in your area. Chances are you'll find one or two vets that are used by numerous people - they will have experience with Boxers and will probably be your best bet.

Also, remember that it is perfectly acceptable (and actually a good idea) to schedule a "getting to know you" visit with the vet & staff - you can meet the vet and get a feeling for the way he/she interacts with you and your dog, and your Boxer will see that going to the vet does not always mean being jabbed or poked or prodded You'll have to pay for the office call, but it's worth it, IMO, for the peace of mind you'll having knowing you trust the vet before you really need them!
