I do not have a boxer yet, but am very interested and trying to learn all I can about them. I've read many articles and a few books about them. I'm trying to make sure a boxer is right for me. I'm taking my time because I'm in an apartment right now but will be in first home by next spring!!(finally done with my bachelors degree) I'm thinking about going through a boxer rescue organization. So if anyone out there has had a very good experience with a rescue organization (especially around cincinnati ohio) please let me know. any tips or special boxer knowledge that all you experienced owners have would be appreciated also. Thanks to all, Leslie

Hello and welcome to the board :)

It is so good you are doing a research before getting a boxer, that means you and your dog will be happy together! It's twice good that you are considering a rescue to get a boxer from, these dogs might have been abused by their previous cruel owners but, indeed, they need the second chance with someone who will love them.
I wish you best of luck in finding your boxer.

And, by the way, boxers feel great in apartments if you provide them with enough outdoor time, if your spend your time with them and love them.

Welcome aboard!

Kudos appicon appicon

Boxers are something else, I knew that before but am now really assured after having our Daisy with us for the past 6 mo. and watching her grow.

By the way, they really do fine living in an apartment. We live in an apartment too (but are a little lucky because it is a two-story flat with a terrace) and we have ample open area for her to run around and play outside, and she is doing perfectly.

I would already have a boxer right now in my apt. but there is a weight restriction. I grew up with german sheperds then we had an austrailian cattle dog and a rhodesian ridgeback. and now i have my own austrailian cattle dog named kyra. I promised kyra when i got her that she would have a fenced in yard and a boxer to play with by the time she was 3. :) thanks for the replies.

Best of luck to you, And it's great that your thinking of going through boxer rescue. And it's nice to hear you are doing your research. BTW most Boxers adapt to you lifestyle, I live in a condo and Pretty does just fine....We go for walks alot and she just loves that idea!

Hi Lew,

Did you get a Boxer? If you did, was it a Rescue? I recently rescued a 2-1/2 year old flashy fawn altered female. She is my third boxer but my first rescue. The thought of my Tyra sitting on DEATH ROW upsets my stomach. She is sooo sweet. She is well behaved and very affectionate. She greets all my visitors with HUGS. All my neighbors love her and the kids knock on my door for me to bring her out. Tyra has so much to offer everyone she touches. I am glad we found her and gave her the chance to GIVE all that she GIVES to those that meet her.

nope i haven't gotten my boxer yet. but after reading a lot of stories on various boxer rescue sights - it is definitely going to be a rescue boxer that i do get. I have read some amazing stories. Congrats on Tyra. what did you mean by fawn "altered" female. I don't know all the boxer terms yet. ;) just trying to learn as much as i can. thanks for the reply.

Boxers are Great Pets! My hubby and I enjoy our Ruby's quirks ;)

We live in an apartment and they are great indoor dogs. Not too much hair to clean up and they love just hanging out.

Good Luck!

Altered means that the animal is spayed/neutered. Most dogs and cats from Rescue Groups or Humane Societies are already altered.

Fawn describes the color which is reddish brown like a deer. Brindles can also be fawn colored but have stripes.

Tyra is a FLASHY FAWN. Boxers with white markings on the muzzle are called FLASHY. My other two were the classic fawn with all black muzzles.

Here is a TIP to finding a rescue dog. Go to www.petfinder.com.
On the left hand corner of the home page you will fill in breed, age, sex, etc. Then you put in your City and State. Petfinder will locate some dogs that fit your request. I did this and was able to see every boxer at every Pound or Rescue Group within a 100 mile radius. THAT IS HOW I FOUND MY TYRA.

Let me know how it works out for you. Puppies are great too but beware of backyard breeders. If you prefer raising one from a Pup then you would want to go to a reputable breeder. Since it is your first boxer you might want one from a Pup. I guarantee you that you will never want any other breed again. I cannot stress enough how wonderful boxers really are. KEEP IN TOUCH.
