Way to Go!!!

I quit smoking about five months ago, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself....I feel great! I had tried many times previously, but for some reason this time just seemed to work.

I found a website that really helped. It said that all the quit smoking aids (the patch, nicorette, etc.) do is keep a small amount of nicotine in your body so that you don't want a cigarette quite so bad.....but because they keep that small amount in your system, you WILL have those craving for as long as you're using the aid and once you stop using them, your body will go through the same withdrawals as if you had quit cold turkey (so why not just get it over with). If you just quit cold turkey, your cravings will peak at about day four, as your body is cleansing itself. After that, it really does get easier.

I stopped drinking coffee (couldn't drink coffee without associating it with smoking) and switched to green tea (very good for your immune system) and started doing cardio excercise which made me huff and puff and realize the damage that smoking had done to my lungs (hiking is a good one to make you realize this...I could hardly get up the first hill the first time I went). Just make sure to keep yourself (and your hands busy). Don't sweat it if you have a weak moment and have a puff (I know I did a few times), it doesn't mean you've failed, it's just a small setback...just see it as that and keep on plugging away day by day!

Good luck to you!
Debbie

My sister just bought the book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Alan Carr (I think) for her bf. A friend of hers swears by it :) This is the book one of the first posters was talking about. Hopefully it will work!

You could always go and clean your teeth everytime you want a ciggie. Ive also heard eating carrot sticks helps because of the feeling of having something between your fingers where the ciggie once was ;)

Good luck on your venture :D

I know how hard it is to quit smoking. I tried several times. I used the patch and still smoked while wearing one. I finally quit cold turkey after my first granddaughter was born. I used just one piece of nicorette gum and a lot of Ben and Jerry's. It's been 8 1/2 years now. I can't truthfully say that it is out of my system. The effects of the nicatine probably are, but mentally, I am still a smoker. I may be hard to understand, but I don't crave cigarettes, and I haven't had one in all this time, and have a hard time being around the smoke, but when I dream, I dream that I am smoking. When I wake up, I feel guilty for smoking and look for the pack of cigarettes. I did enjoy smoking. One thing that I know is for sure, if I was told that I was going to die within six months and nothing I could do would chage it, I would start smoking again. Does anyone else that has quit feel that way? -Jan

How absolutely AWESOME that you're quitting!!!
I started smoking at 14 - friends and I would share a pack of cigarettes each week (barely smoking anything, but it doesn't take much to form the habit!)
I quit the first time when I found out I was pregnant with my first son. I stayed off them the entire pregnancy, nursing, and for my next pregnancy and nursing, then I left my husband and within a year of that, I was smoking again.
I tried to quit so many times after that, but always ended up giving myself permission to "smoke socially" - which inevitably led to full-blown smoking habit each time. It can be so hard!
Five years ago I ended up with chicken pox - rare as an adult, especially if you had it as a kid, which I had. Chicken pox in adults frequently ends up causing pneumonia (don't ask me why but it does). I was hospitalized briefly, and then suffered over three months of pain and trouble breathing - scared the hell out of me. Once you have a serious lung issue, and can't use your lungs like you used to, you stop taking your lungs for granted.
I've never had the desire to smoke since. Unfortunately, I have a bit of scar tissue from that episode, but it is certainly less of a health issue than if I had continued smoking.
Keep forging ahead - after the first week or so it will get easier, and you can feel so great about your accomplishment!
And keep gum around at all times!!!

Congrats

Congratulations on your decision. That is the first step! I tecnically was a smoker, but it was more in my teens and I quit before I got too addicted (a bad cold forced me to stop at 19). But, my DH smokes and it is such a TURN-OFF. I hate when he comes to bed smelling so gross. I might be in the mood, but lose it after that! He tried to quit a while back and was doing really well. Down to 3 a day, but stress drove him back (he has a stressful job). I have tried to be as suportive as I can...all he really asks of me is to just not talk about it. He wants try again in Jan. with a new job he will be taking. I hope he can! I will be watching your thread and waiting to hear how you are doing so I can try to support him the best I can.
GOOD LUCK! We are rooting for you!!!
ps: do it before your daughter is aware of it. children are more likely to smoke if they see their parents doing it. my son (9) has begged my husband to stop. to our dismay, his addiction is too strong!

day 1

I had my last cig last night at 11:30pm then went to bed, I woke up this morning and the first thing i done was stuck a patch on my arm, then got washed and dressed. Instead of having a cig and coffee for breakfast. i had toast then played with Maci and my daughter Leonie (had to take my mind off cigs at it was killing me!!) I have changed my routine so much today that Leonie and Maci look at me confused lol. I have ate a whole pack of chewing gum and mints

I HAVE NOT HAD ONE CIG TODAY!!!!

I'm so happy, it has been hard even tho i have the patch on but i couldn't be doing with withdrawlal (sp) symptons as well as habbits..

At the moment i am eatin noodles with chopsticks (keeping me busy and taking me ages)

Thankyou everyone for your advice i'll keep you updated
