Hey everyone. I know I'm still quite new here, but still feel like there are alot of very caring people here. For that I am grateful. So anyways, my Ginger is sick. My wife and I are not sure what is wrong with her. She saw the vet a couple days ago and was diagnosed with a cold and an upset tummy. The vet put her on some amoxcicilin <sp> and just said to monitor her. Well, last night Ginger didn't want to play, didn't want to eat or drink anything, and only wanted to stay in her crate. So we let her sleep through the night after giving her some water through a turkey baster so that she would at least have that in her system. This morning we woke up and she was not whining to get out of her crate like she normally does, she just wanted to lay there and sleep. So we called the vet again and my wife and Ginger are going to see her right now as I type this. Hopefully all is well with my furbaby girl. Anyone else's pups ever have these symptoms when they were young? I'll keep you all posted.

You may find out when you get there that she has a fever. From my experience that really takes the wind out of their sails.

Let us know when you get back from the vet.

Well, Ginger came back from the vet around lunch time. The vet said that a fecal sample was tested and came back positive for Parvo antigins. She said that she was not 100% sure that it was parvo though because Ginger had received her vaccination for parvo only 10 days ago and that it could be having an impact on the reading of the test. She also said that Ginger was not acting like a puppy that has parvo acts. The vet thinks she may also have some sort of parasite that is pretty prevelant in this area that could be causing her to have symptoms similar to those of parvo. So, she gave her a shot for that parasite, and a shot for nausea and told us to give her 24 hours to see if she improves. If she does show signs of improvement then it is promising that she shoudn't have parvo. On an encouraging note Ginger was acting kinda playful at lunch today which is an improvement from the lethargic way she was acting last night. So, I will be praying harder than I have ever prayed before for her and her recovery from whatever it is that is ailing her.

Do you know if she was tested for Coccidia? Our Sasha was diagnosed with coccidia as a puppy and she had some of the same symptoms. Did anyone suggest cottage cheese to you as well as plain yogurt (make sure it has active ingredients) She had to take some meds and we also gave her this stuff that we got from Petsmart (god for the life of me I can't remember the name) but it is a supplement to help with nutrients, you can search petsmart website and they will help you out.

Hope that your baby feels better soon

The parasite that the vet is treating Ginger for is Coccidia. She gave some medication called Albon for it and said that the parasite acts a lot like parvo. I looked up a bunch of info on Coccidia and found many similarities between it and Parvo. I just talked with my wife who is home with Ginger right now and she told me that Ginger is drinking some Pedialyte and is playing quite a bit. She said Ginger looks skinny though, probably from the lack of food in her tummy. So, I'm still praying.......maybe it isn't as bad as we first thought.

Definitely do the cottage cheese, that helps somehow with the parasite. It was a scary experience for us, and it seemed to take her some time to get to her puppy self, but once she did, look out. Our vet also suggested the baby food on her dry food to add flavor, or you can do it with rice, that will help bind her stools.

She will be back to normal before you know it. Our Sasha was 7 lbs when we first got her now she is over 30 lbs

So how long did it take Sasha to get to her normal puppy self? Also, Ginger is 7 lbs. How long did it take Sasha to go from 7-30??
Thanks for all the helpful advice.

Our next vet appt which was 2 wks later she had gained almost 7 more lbs.... It seemed to just take time, frustrating because it was obvious to us when we picked her up from teh breeder that something was wrong, but we took her anyway because we were already in love. Also do yogurt (active kind) that was a huge help. No more than 2 tlbs a day though

My Laila was also just treated for coccidia with Albon. It took her a few days of the medicine and she was back to normal. We fed her boiled chicken & rice by itself for a while & then mixed it in with her kibble. She loved that & it also helped to bind up her stool. It was definately a scary experience that took a while to diagnose. She also had some worms in her stool & had to be dewormed quite a few times. Just keep an eye on her and hopefully the medicine will take effect soon & she'll be back to her normal puppy self!

I am so sorry that your baby is ill. The yogurt and cottage cheese is very good. I give it to my furbabies daily. Just a dab on top of their food. It helps with digestion. Ice cubes are also good th keep them hydrated. i hope Ginger is back to herself soon. I will be saying a prayer for you and her.
