Gettting Brutus fixed

Well, I know I can't avoid it anymore - I'm going to the vet today to make an appointment to have Brutus neutered. He's just over a year old so I know it has to be done soon.

I'm dreading it because I know he'll be miserable. I've also heard bad stories about personality changes.

Can anybody share a story that will make me more comfortable with this painful, yet necessary task?

kaiser just got neutered last week. the only change i've noticied in personality is he's more hyper. the neuter hasn't changed his energy either (he gets his stiches out on thursday) he's just as ready to go out and play as before.

dont be scared (ez to say hard to do, cuz i was nervous too) bru-bru will pull out just fine

Yes, it is sad, but they get over it...

Willie was just neutered last month and I cried for him. But after a few days he was back to normal. It is hard to keep him calm for 2 weeks (doctor's orders), but as soon as his stitches were out - he was running and jumping, just like nothing happened.

You and Brutus will be sad for a couple of days, but its just part of life. I wish I could have been more supportive, but I don't want to lie - it is a rough.

My boy just got neutered last Wednesday. When he came home he was so tired and the next morning he still didn't want to do anything. I felt so bad all day Thursday because Odin just didn't seem happy. I wondered if this was going to be his new personality. Then when I got home Thursday afternoon I got kidney beans and kisses. He wanted to go for his usuall sprint around the backyard but I had to keep him a little calm because he still had his stitches to worry about. Now he is back to normal, you wouldn't even know he had it done and he is two years old. I worried a lot believe me, but he didn't change a bit.:p

Thank you all for your stories. I'm starting to feel better.

I was also just reading another thread and someone mentioned that it's better to get it done when the dog is younger. Does anyone know the ideal age and, is 1-year old a little late?

The dog heals a lot faster when they are younger so it is usally easier for them. I think 5 to 6 months is when most vets prefer to neuter, I am not positive on that though. But any age is ok to have it done. Like I said before, Odin is 2years and 4 months and after two days he was as good as new.

We just had Tiger fixed and he didn't have a problem. He's quite close to two years now. They day he came home from the operation, he was a little groggy and grumpy (that's the only time we gave him the pain pills) but after a couple days, he wouldn't sit still. He continued to run and play and such. When we went to get his stiches out, he didn't care at all. Not to mention, they only found one still intact. He doesn't act any differently now than before. Everything will be okay. Like Amanda said, it's better when they are younger because of healing, but Tiger had no problems. The vet said that it really didn't matter the age. Your guy will be great!!!! Stay strong.

Don't worry. Brutus will be fine after a few days. My Tyson was groggy the first day and I was a worry wort the day of his surgery. But the vet called after the surgery to let me know everything went great, he even called the next day to check on Tyson. Tyson has not had any change in personality, he is as happy as a clam. Good luck.

ozzy is going on Wed and I have faith that he will be fine. Never had a problem before (touch wood) when my rottie was done, the vet told me to keep him on leash not off for a few days andhe was fine. Don't worry mom!

I just recently got my one year old male fixed. I was afraid of so many things: Personality changes and lack of manliness. I can honestly say that he is the same. He does not pee all over and hump other dogs as much but he is the same. It really is a good thing. I think it was more tramatic for me than him. I remeber the day I picked him up from the vet and he was all drugged up and looking very sad. I felt so bad.. "What did I do". The next day he was almost back to his normal self. The day after next he wanted to go running and I had to tell him NO because the vet told us to keep it low key for 4 days. Honestly, it seems horrible but it is better for them in the long run.. If anything my boy is big lover.. not like he wasnt before but I think that having them nueutered (killing the testosterone) makes them less curious to wonder and more into staying home and being with their family.
