Hubby and I went all out and bought a super nice leather living room set. It's worked well and is remarkably easy to clean Johann's drool off of.

But, his (Johann's) chair smells awful. I'm not sure if his anal glands went crazy today while he was sleeping or what....but our whole living room and especially the chair smell like rotten fish. I used the leather cleaner that we got from the furniture store and it got the stain off, but the smell is still there.

Also, does anal gland "juice" smell like rotten fish and leave a small amount of oily residue? Poor Johann keeps chasing his butt around and licking it, he's happier after a bath.

Not sure, but maybe vinegar would do the job. Hope someone has some ideas, because I feel like my house smells like 2 boxers!! I have started sweeping the floors daily, and spraying vinegar on the furniture, carpets, etc. But with the humidity so high, it just doesn't seem to be helping.

I don't know if this would work on leather, but I would be afraid it would hurt the dye on leather. If you want to try it I would do a test spot somewhere where it can't be seen. Other then that, I would call the store where you bought it. I also did a quick web search and found this link, but then again I would test in a inconspicuous spot. Smelly Leather Couch

Good luck! If you do find something that works please post it as I just got my new leather sofa about 1 1/2 weeks ago and so far I've kept the pups off, but you never know what the future will bring.

I agree with the above post. Be careful what you use because you can leave a spot if you leather is dyed. We also have leather. You can buy specifically made wipes to wipe down you leather. As for the smell, it sounds like the anal glands to me, it is not a pleasant smell! I would give it some time and see if the smell lessens on its on. Burn lots of good smelling candles!

You might try Baking Soda. It is good at removing smells. Just make it into a paste and rub it on. I would definitely try it in an inconspicuous spot first.

I agree baking soda is the best thing I have found for removing odors...works wonders.

charcoal will also " absorb " the foul Oder in the air ~ of course wont eliminate it , but better then using tons of fabrez to cover up ( it makes me and sam sneeeze to much - lol ) just buy a bag of cheep stuff and use coffee filters and lay them around under couch, in corners - where ever u can hide them - then throw out everyday and put down fresh till it smells better. seams crazy but it works !
we used them in the basement of a house we bought and it had been damp and closed up for years, along with tons of cleaning, it started to smell better in a cpl days !

and also " smells " like anal glands to me - lol , the groomers will clean those out for u ~ herd very bad stories about ppl tying to do it at home ~~

keep us posted and good luck !

What kind of charcoal? Like the kind you use to cook on a grill?

I have a box of baking soda under the chair right now (made the paste and spot tested; it left a weird film over the leather). The room itself doesn't smell anymore, just the seat cushion. I think it was a scheme for Johann to ensure that no one ever tries to sit in "his" chair.

It smells a little better today (used leather cleaner yesterday). I called the furniture store to see if they have any ideas- the salesperson is calling the manufacturer and leather tannery to see what would be safe to use.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. :)
