"Culture Clash" is one book I found very helpful. There is actually a books forum where you might find lots of suggestions - or do a a search and you'll find all sorts of things.

Definitely get your girl spayed. You already saw that accidents can happen, and there are health benefits for her. Spaying does not mess up growth or make a dog fat. Eating too much and/or lack of exercise makes a dog fat - same as people. :) Six months is a pretty typical age for spaying. Don't wait much longer as you don't want her to go into heat before you have it done. That's the only way to be sure there won't be accidents, and getting pregnant on her first heat would be bad - she'll be too young. Also encourage your boyfriend to have his girl spayed as well. As you already learned, a dog will do anything to get to a female in heat. Next time it might be someone else's dog and he'll end up with mixed puppies that will be harder to place in good homes. Leaving her alone outside in heat was a bad idea. Fences will not keep dogs away from a female in heat!

Congratulations on your new girl!
