I know this doesn't help you all who are struggling with the older dogs pulling. But the best advice I ever got which I did from day one with Scooter when I got him , was to be a tree. When he got ahead of me or started pulling, I stopped walking and only would we return to walking when he stopped pulling. My dog is 8 months old and has never pulled me, not once. Even when there are other dogs , squirrels, etc around. He does get ahead of me sometimes and all I have to do is say wait and he slows up till we are side by side again. I am not saying Scootz is perfect (not by a long shot)...
So to all new pup owners, be a tree from the get go, each and every time , it takes time and patience but is so worth it.
To the older dogs and owners who are struggling with the pulling, I wish I knew what to say to help you out. Formal obedience training is worth its weight in gold. Again, lots of practice (homework) on your part and patience, but worth it. My trainer did not use treats as a reward , but lots of praise and affection when the dog did something correctly. The focus was not so much on correcting wrong behavior , but on rewarding good behavior with love and affection...
