Gas and what to do about it!!!

Currently I feed my boxers Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Which is a pretty good food IMHO. But, it really makes my kids gassy. I asked the owner of the shop where I buy the food what I can do about it. She told me that Chicken Soup is a food that is steam cooked and that the process can make dogs (especially sensitive stomach dogs, like Boxers) gassy. She told me to try and sprinkle a product named OptaGest (a prebiotic) on their food and see if that helped. Or to try and find a "baked" dog food that she would be carrying soon.

Let me tell you - the prebiotic helps tremendously. But at $20 a bottle, I'm looking for a different solution.

Does anyone have any other recommendations for ridding by kids of their bad gas, or can anyone recommend a good "baked" dog food that won't put me in the poor house?

My dog Otis is very very sensitive, and I use a Costco brand called Nature's Domain that is a 4 star rating from the dog Food Advisor. It's a lighter protein and it's a salmon and sweet potato formula and it's grain free... and he does AMAZING on it. Try something with salmon and sweet potato. That seems to help a lot of dogs with sensitive stomachs. I know a lot of clients at my work ( I work a dog boarding facility) use lighter proteins on their dogs if they have sensitive stomachs.

Otherwise you could always cook your own burger and rice.

You can also try an acidophilus capsules which is very similar to a probiotic, get the human version at any store, Walmart, etc usually runs around $5-$7. I used to get mine at puritansale online. You can also get ProZyme which is a digestive enzyme for dogs. It's around $22 (shipping included) on Amazon but it lasts for a REALLY long time.

If you still get gas using both fo those then I'd recommend a food switch, but if you like the Chicken Soup food adding in those 2 things should really help.

Generally I would say that bad gas is a sign that their body is not tolerating the food... but if they are otherwise doing well on Chicken Soup then I probably wouldn't change the food. Juno used to get rotten gas but I give her Prozyme now and it's done the trick for her. Luckily there's a store around here that sells it, so it only runs me about $12 a bottle and it lasts a long time... I can't remember the last time I bought it, at least a month or so ago and we still have a lot left. The dose is about 1/4 teaspoon for each cup of food.

Otherwise we've tried 4 or 5 different brands of food, with a variety of ingredients, and the only thing that has helped is the Prozyme. You'll never get rid of gas completely but it's not uncommon now for me to go DAYS without ever noticing her fart.

Never say never, it's been YEARS since I've smelled any of my guys.

Well, I have been sprinkling cinnamon on my 2 dogs nighttime meals now for 5 or 6 nights. And it works. . Boa has not been farting, and if he has, the smell is gone. Wow, who knew, cinnamon. But its such a relief, as he could really clear a room out, and it was everynight.

So give cinnamon a try. The first night I put it on their foods, they both went to eat, sniffed it, looked at me, like "Is this ok", I told them to eat, then they both did. Since then, they dig right in. So they seem to like it, and since it is good for them, why not. And bonus that it has helped Boa and his gas.

I thought cinnamon was toxic to dogs? I may be wrong since I can't find any info on here about it.....but I really thought it was true.

It appears that I am completely wrong about cinnamon being toxic. Oops...sorry everyone.
