Furless ears?

Jewellee is losing the hair on the backs of both ears. I noticed it a few weeks ago and thought it might be from the standard "boxer rubbing face on couch, rug, you, etc" but it has spread. I took her to the vet today and she did a skin scraping and it's not mange. She doesn't seem to be itchy but I'm concerned. The vet said that females will sometimes lose hair during/after a heat cycle and it's usually symetrical loss. Anyone else know of this or have any other ideas??

Can't say I have experienced this....they do have very fine hair there as it is, could it be allergy related?

Thyroid problems sometimes cause symmetrical hair loss, as well. Where is she in relation to her heat cycle?

We have already had a full thyroid panel done and it came back normal. She started her heat on/around Sept. 15th so she's about 2 months out now. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it but I'm concerned since it's spreading. I've e-mailed her breeder and am waiting for an answer from her.

My bitch always lost hair after whelping - quite a bit of it. It could be that Jewellee is going through a false pregnancy, as she would've had the "pups" a few weeks ago if she'd been bred.

You may want to find out if you had a full thyroid panel run. My parents collie tested fine twice on her thyroid panel until they ran a full panel. My mother didn't know there were many variations of a thyroid test.

I requested a FULL panel for the thyroid when they did it but I will verify that it was done. I will be taking her back to the vet in about 2 weeks and we'll see if there's been any change. The breeder has never had this happen to her girls and has no idea what it could be. Her first thought was thyroid also.

I know this post is from a few years back..but Heidi has symmetrical loss of hair behind her ears..I didn't know if this was a boxer trait or a problem. Did you ever get the results back from the thyroid test? I know Jewellee is no longer with you but I am interested to see what the vet said. Heidi's skin behind her ears is about the color of her fur so the hair loss is really not noticable if you're just looking at her. It's been this way for awhile..I didn't even realize it could be a thyroid problem..I thought she just had thin hair. She has put on some pounds but I contributed that to getting spayed. Maybe there is something that needs to be checked into. She has her yearly appt in February and I may need to bring this up. Thank you in advance for your help.

My boxer has the same thing going on. I asked his vet and she didn't seem concerned. Sometimes there is a little fuzz back there, but then a week or so later I notice his weird-o ears are all bald & leathery, . (they don't lay right sometimes)It hasn't spread and he doesn't act uncomfortable, so I haven't messed with it...maybe it's just the way he is...

Maybe that's just the way Heidi is too. There is no other hair loss at all and she has energy and seems normal to me! Thanks for responding!
