Vela my husband was the same way.
Before we got Tyson, I had a rottie, Zepplin, he's passed away now.
My husband and Zep had a love/hate relationship for each other. I think they were both just jealous of each other. They were always competing with each other. If my husband tried to hug me, Zep would jump up and push my husband away from me. It was a battle of wills when it came to who was going to sit with me or who got greeted at the door first.
So when it came to the bed, Zep was never allowed up there so we waited till dad left. One day Zep decided that he wasn't going to wait for him to leave, he just waited till he got in the shower. When my husband got out of the shower and seen Zep, he flipped! Told me to get the dog out of the bed. I told him, "if you don't want him up there, then you tell him" I just rolled over.
Well, he told Zep to get down three, four, ten times, Zep just ignored him, so then he tried to pull him down off the bed. He's tugging and pulling, and then Zep starts growling at him (ever try to pull a 145 lb rottie that don't want to move) My hubby says, "hon will help me!!" I just sat there giggling. My husband just storms off mumbling, "New rules! As long as I'm not in bed, he can get up there!" I'm like, "Duh! your just now figuring that one out??"
Then to top things off, once he started to
allow Zep up in bed, hubby wasn't allowed to kiss me good bye in the morning no more LOL, he would bend down to kiss me and Zep would roll over and put his head on my chest and growl. Boy did they not like each other,

.
Now with our boxer pup, when my husband heads for bed, he calls the puppy in with him. I will go in there and he will snuggled up with his arm around the puppy. It's so cute. But every morning my husband will say, "I'm tired of that dog digging his nails into me everynight." LOL, but you gotta love him. Both of them.
