For the last few days I've noticed a rash in Thora's groin area that's quite red (see photo). She licks it once in a while, but not obsessively. I'm really not sure how long it's been there because she's not the type to expose that area for belly rubs or anything. I thought I saw some redness there a couple weeks ago and assumed it was a brush burn from her leash. Didn't notice it again until the other night. Funny thing is DH had a rash just like this in his armpit a couple weeks ago, but much larger. He went to the doctor to make sure it wasnt from a tick bite and was prescribed an anti-fungal cream called clotrimazole/betamethasone dipropionate (Lotrisone). Now I'm wondering if they both have the same thing and if I can try the cream on her to see if it helps. I have to take her for her lyme vaccine soon (I know I know, but it's BAD here and my vet strongly urges it) so I can schedule the apt with the vet instead of a tech if need be but I'd rather save the $50 if I can since her annual exam last week cost me nearly $200. Has anyone seen something like this before?

Could you phone your vet to see if you can use that medication on your dog?

I can try to call. She doesn't always have time to respond and may want to see the rash in person. I was looking up ringworm, which it could very well be, and for dogs you can use Lotrimin, so I might try that since it's not as strong of a medication. I'll just have to walk her or give her a bully stick or something to keep her from licking the meds off right away. When she goes potty she practically touches the ground, so I can see how she might have picked it up where she did.

If it were me I'd definitely try treating at home before vetting, unless she really seems bothered by it. I'm not sure about that anti-fungal cream but I'd want something more "all inclusive" anyway just in case it's not fungal. If you have a farm supply store and can get Vetericyn spray that stuff normally works great on just about everything. Other pet stores have it too but ya know farm stuff is cheaper. :p

Also see if you can just email a photo to your vet, especially since you were just in for an exam.

There's a Chaar store right down the road. I've never been in but I bet they carry something like what you're talking about. She doesn't seem bothered by it but if it is ringworm I want to get on it before it spreads or jumps to me. I'll be cleaning all the bedding, blankets, and pillows this weekend I guess :/

Hopefully your fur baby is healed up, but that spots looks a lot like ringworm. We just got over this in our home from two kitties we adopted that brought it with them. This stuff is highly contagious and can take months to cure. I don't want to scare you, but if it is ringworm and you haven't already started an aggressive treatment regiment, I would do so right away.

Have you had it checked by vet to see what the diagnosis is?

I suspected ringworm too, especially because DH had a similar, larger spot in his armpit that his doctor just called a "fungal infection." Strangely enough I haven't gotten anything and I cuddle with her every day. I started putting some Lotrimin on it with gloved hands about a week ago because I was afraid the stuff DH had would be too strong and never got around to calling my vet. I only apply it once a day and it is getting better. It's pale pink whereas it was bright red before. If I did it twice a day maybe it would be gone by now but I always forget.
