Im still shopping around for a camera and so far the Fuji Finepix S3100 4.0MP Digital Camera and the Kodak EasyShare DX590 5.0MP Digital Camera top my list.

The Fuji only has a 6X optical zoom and it is around $399 canadian. The Kodak has 10X optical zoom and it runs around 549-599 Canadian.

The Canon PowerShot S1 IS 3.2MP Digital Camera is also a 10X zoom and is about 599 Canadian as well

Just wondering if anyone knew anything about these cameras. I just really want a camera that has a good zoom and will produce good quality pictures. If you know anything about these camera, or have pictures taken with either of them, any input would be good and pictures would help in my decision. I posted links to where i got the info on the camera if you need to see more.

I just purchased the fuji fine pix s3100 after comparing it with the kodak easy share. I think that I had looked at a differnt kodak model however it had less zoom but cost more than the fuji. It is a good camera for the $ easy to use with good picture quality.

I have the Fujifilm S5000. I would highly reccommend it. Here are some features.
The FinePix S5000 features Fujifilm's 4th generation Super CCD HR (High Resolution) sensor, with 3.1 million effective pixels for crisp, vivid images. Coupled with a powerful 10x optical zoom (equivalent to a 37-370mm on a 35mm camera) it allows photo enthusiasts to easily capture images of distant subjects. It's styled after and handles like a SLR camera and offers a full range of exposure control including Automatic, Program AE, Shutter speed and Aperture priority, Manual and pre-programmed scene modes.
The FinePix S5000 offers 3.1 million effective pixels, which can produce images of 2,816 x 2,120 (6 million) recorded pixels for high-quality prints up to 16 x 20 inches in size. In addition to powering the camera's resolution, the Super CCD HR sensor provides rich color reproduction and life-like detail in captured images. Recorded images can be saved in standard JPEG format or for the ultimate in picture quality use the CCD-RAW mode. The camera also offers an amazing 10x optical and 2.2x digital zoom and optional wide and telephoto lens adapters.

If you are into the long zoom (x10), I would suggest a camera that has a image stabiliser like the Canon S1. They cost more but the risk of getting blurry photos by shaking is much lower when you are at full zoom and when it's not sunny. I still have the Canon Pro90IS (also a X10 zoom but "only" a 2.6 megapixels. More at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonpro90) that has been remplaced by the S1. Some of the photos of squirrels I posted here were taken by that Canon.
You can read some reviews about the S1 at

The Panasonic FZ3 is interesting too with its x12 stabilised zoom.

thanks a bunch guys. I really dont know much about cameras i just know i want a big zoom. I love taking pictures of animals and such but...my cameras have next to no zoom..so i cant get close enough without scaring them off.

Olly- the Canon S1 i just searched it, and its only 599.99..so its not that expensive. Ive seen some of your pictures.. is that what you used to take them? (the london eye, the squirrels etc)

throwing in my opinion!

not sure if you were still looking or not but thought I'd throw my 2 cents in! I've had three fuji finepix digital cameras and they took some VERY nice pictures! The 6x zoom (which two of mine had) is enough for *most* situations.

If you are looking for more zoom, you might consider the Panasonic Lumix digital cameras (which I have now) - 12x zoom with image stabilzation makes for incredible closeups. And that's a LEICA LENS on those cameras! You don't hear much about the Panasonic cameras, but they are definately worth looking into.

JMHO!
