Hello everyone,
I am in need of some strong opinions and help.
My Sasha is going to be 6 months old next week. We live in NJ but on a dead end street near woods. We have LOTS of mosquitos during the hotter months (I get bit A LOT) and of course I know I need to protect her from the ticks and fleas. We have neighbors with outdoor cats that bring fleas back from the woods (I've seen them on my neighbor).

My question is what is the best to use, Frontline Plus or AdvantixII?????

I have read such strong opinions on this forum stating the Advantix is so strong and that it can possibly be posionous to kids etc. BUT I need something that is NOT going to drive my Sasha crazy (itching) as those mosquitos are so annoying. We use aerosol repellents for the air as well as OFF Deep Woods on ourselves (of course I won't use that on her) BUT does Advantix REALLY repel mosquitos and kill fleas/ticks/mosquitos and Frontline only kills fleas/ticks????

Please help!

I don't think I've ever seen a strong argument for one over the other. Some people have concerns about the toxicity of any topical treatment. I've used Advantix for years, but not necessarily because I think it's better than the others... it's just what my vet always gave us. We used to do a lot of camping in the mountains and my boy was always fine as far as fleas and ticks go. I don't think he was bothered by mosquitos any more than we were. We just bought a house pretty much in the middle of the woods, so we'll find out soon how effective it is haha. I don't have any kids, so I can't speak on that regard, but I don't see why it would be any more toxic to children than anyone else. Because boxers have such short coats, it will sit on top a bit for a few days, so just use caution when petting your pup for a few days and wash hands and such before touching your face or anything. Maybe someone else can speak on behalf of Frontline in regard to the mosquitos as I've never used it.

In reading more on Advantix I think that's going to be my choice. I truly don't want her bugged by the mosquitos.
I don't have small children that live with me but nieces and nephews that visit often in the summer.
She loves to be rubbed especially on head/shoulders/back. I will be sure to give it at least a week before rubbing in that area of application and wash hands a lot.
When applying Advantix do you only put it in between the shoulder blades or do you put it in the 2 to 4 spots as I have read??????

Thanks

I'm fairly sure (but not 100%) that you are not supposed to use Advantix on your dog if you have cats as well.

They do sell dog bug sprays as well. I have a citronella/neet spray that we spray on Johann before walks in the woods/fields to prevent ticks and mosquitos (in addition to Frontline).

I don't have any cats so I may still use Advantix.
As for my neighbor's cats I would hope they would stay in their yard or where ever they roam since some are indoor and some are outdoor cats.

I have used Advantix since Cindel was old enough. I love it. It does keep the Mosquitos away. and yes if you have cats you are urged not to use it..I have one cat now..as 2 passed away...and Calypso stays away from Cindel so I don't worry there.

I currently use Advantix on my boxer. It works well, I never saw a mosquito on her or flea or tick. You know how bad the mosquitos are here in Jersey. I just put it from shoulder blades and a little past. When I did several spots I felt it dripped and I did not want that. I would stay in shoulder blade area. I used to use Frontline Plus with my previous boxer but when I used it on Lily I saw fleas on her. That it when I made the switch.

I have used both Advantix and Frontline. Arabella welts up from mosquito bites. I know this because we switched vets and got the Frontline. Never saw a welt with the Advantix. Both give me headaches for the first day or so, tho'.

I started using Frontline 2 years ago. Before that, I never used any sort of flea/tick prevention on my dogs. We have a huge mosquito population in MN and my dogs have never appeared bothered by them. Juno gets welts from most other things in the summertime, but mosquitoes are not one of the things that cause them on her.

I won't use Advantix because I have a cat (yes - the active ingredient, pyrethrin, is very toxic to cats) and I am super paranoid about organophosphate poisoning occurring in my dogs. Plenty of people use it just fine, but I prefer not to. Just my personal thing, I'm sure the pyrethrin that's in it is what makes it so effective for many people in the first place.

Thanks soooo much everyone. After doing some more research I do believe we are going to go with the Advantix. We also spoke to our vet & others @ the vet's office. I pray my baby reacts well to it
