The stuff about Nutro is a hoax that was aired many months ago, but the web being what it is, things keep circulating. Nutro is an excellent food- especially the Natural line, and and it's been fighting this rumour ever since. My own theory is someone was out to dmage the company (maybe a competitor?)

Actually it was put out by the FDA and was posted here on BW by one of our own Moderators. The FDA link is here: http://www.fda.gov/cvm/efoi/DFreport.doc

The thread I got this from is here: http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21325&highlight=phenobarbitol

Would you show the source for it being a rumor please, would be interesting to compare.

Eric that article you provided didn't provide any evidence that Nutro has those chemicals in its food. All it said was pentobartital has found in some dog foods and may be from euthenized animals. The FDA report didn't name Nutro or any other brand.

A bit late on this, but the rumors about Nutro had to do with the lamb & rice formula causing dilated cardiomyopathy due to taurine deficiency. One of the leader dog programs had a lab-created lamb & rice formula that was linked to DCM in some of their dogs, but it was their own concoction, not Nutro. I can't remember if the leader dog program mentioned the Nutro name for some reason, or if somewhere along the line it got added to the message. At any rate, the company had analyses done and Nutro Lamb & Rice is not deficient in taurine.

Phenobarbitol *was* found in a Nutro product, and as christinelee noted the Appendix of the FDA article lists which one.

Oops - it's pentobarbital, the drug used for euthanasia, that has been found in dog foods, not phenobarbitol, the drug used for seizure control!

Rayna is still doing really well on Innova, but I think it is making Joe have really loose stools....at first they were okay but for the last couple of weeks they are really loose. He was just neutered and I asked them to look at his stool and see what they thought and they said he is healthy and nothing was wrong with him....I was wondering if I should try adding some Pumpkin in with his food or if I should try yet another brand of food? I really like Innova and they seem to as well....but I dont want poor Joe to have loose stools all the time. I thought at first it was the treats we were giving him or the little bit of wet Innova I was mixing in for them, but I stopped doing that and didn't give him treats for a week...and he still had really loose stools.

If you currently feed Innova can you give me your input.
Thanks :)

Pumpkin is great! and you'll notice immediate results with just a big spoonful at each meal :). Although, I'd also advise cutting back on the amount you feed him. The stool shouldn't be that loose - at least that's what's worked for Diego. He's 80#, and he has a little less than 3 cups per day if that helps at all. He gets a dollup of yogurt in the morning, and pumpkin in the evening.

Keep us posted... ~ Lisa

Thanks Lisa....he may be eating too much....they eat about 3 1/2 cups a day each....and I mix in a little of wet...well I was mixing it in....they have just been eating it dry this week.

I will try the pumpkin for sure though!
