Friends boxer has a mast cell on ear

A lady that I know through work has a daughter, who has a 9 month old boxer boy. They noticed a small bump on his ear, and at first thought it was a pimple, then maybe a hot spot. They took him to the vet, and found that it was a mast cell. They did a scraping and will no tomorrow if it is cancer. They can surgically remove the bump, no problem.

I am just wondering what this little guys chanced are to be cancer free. The family is very upset, and worried sick. Any words of wisdom?

MCT's are really common in boxers. My Austin had one removed when he was 4, and he's 9 now and thankfully has never had another one. As long as they get clean margins he should be fine, just make sure they follow up on any other bumps he may get. Not all are MCT, but better safe than sorry. Good luck, let us know what happens.

I found one on Abby when she was 1. They got clean margins when theey removed the lump. Abby is 4 and not another MCT. Thank God.

Bella had an MCT on her ear also. It looked like a wart right where her ear met her head, dead center. My vet at the time (I have since changed due to his treatment of the situation) Said not to worry. Bella had this on her ear from when she was around 9 months old. We just had it removed and she is 21 months. Thank God they got clean margins. That means they got all the cancer and she is cancer free. Hopefully this pup will have the same outcome. I have read on the boards that MCT's in Boxers are usually not an aggressive type. Good Luck.

My Buster, who is 5yrs old, just had a MCT removed from his leg. I had noticed it quite a few months ago but thought that he had aggrivated a cut he had gotten in the same spot. When he went for his check up the vet tested it and it came back postive for cancer. They removed the tumor and he has clean margins so he is cancer free - all of his blood work came back perfect also - they just told us to keep an eye out for anymore bumps that appear. He just had this surgery last week and is doing great!!
