Is it still considered free feeding if you only feed them a set amount and leave it out? I've read some things about only giving them a set amount of time to eat and then taking it away.

We have 2 dogs... our 4 year old wheaten terrier has basically been free fed her whole life. She is at an ideal weight and has been the same weight her whole adult life. Her bowl is always filled but she doesn't eat a whole lot anyway.

Our boxer is a year old, and gets two meals a day, but the food is left out until he finishes. We give him a bowl in the morning which he picks at a little (prob knowing he's going in his crate for the day and can't go to the bathroom). He usually finishes it right away when he gets out after work. After we eat dinner, we give him another bowl and he finishes it throughout the evening.

I have always free fed dogs. My two are both just as happy and healthy as can be. Cody is almost 4 so I am certain he is full grown and he between 25-26 in. at the withers and weighs anywhere from 68-72 lbs. Aniah just turned two and she is a slim and trim girl about 24 in. and weighs 52 lbs. My two know who is boss in the house...they see us filling up their bowls, so they know where the food comes from. Cody potty trained quick as can be...and Aniah used my floor as a bathroom until she was eight months old. She has been difficult from the day she came home....I don't attribute any of it to being free fed.
Anyway....just my two cents, I have never had any problems and am an advocate of free feeding.
