Our house is on a busy road which is currently under major construction. On Monday morning I was on my way to work when I got a cell phone call from a man who said he had my boy Fred! My husband had just let him and Lucy out a couple minutes before the call and we had no idea how he got out. The man was right outside our house when he found Fred. DH checked the gates which were secure and we feared he had jumped the fence or found a hole under it. I got home from work and took the dogs out, hoping that Fred would show me how he escaped. It was already dark so I took a flashlight. Fred and Lucy were just going about their business as usual and then Fred headed to the fence. I was examining the fence with the light when I realized that a section of the fence had been REMOVED! Fred walked right out of the yard along side the road. I called him back and he was coming. A man in a car stopped in the road. His window must have been broken so he opened the door to talk to me, and Fred thought it was time to go for a ride and bolted toward the car. At the same time another car was coming. I screamed for Fred to stop, I was so scared. Fred twisted away from the car at the very last second, he was right by the back tire. It was horrifying. For some stupid reason the HWY Dept took down a section of our fence without letting us know. I was so mad. I made several phone calls and spoke to a worker on the road. The worker denied that they had removed the fence. A man from the HWy Dept called me today and went to my house. He aggreed that they must have done it and assured me that he would make sure it would not happen again. My Husband fixed the fence right away and he thinks that they hit the fence with a bulldozer, then moved it out of the way and forgot about it. The fence is behind a lot of thick bushes which is why we did not notice it gone. I will be inspecting the fence every day until the construction is done. I am so thankful that my boy is ok.

My gosh, how scary for you! I am so glad Fred is OK! I think it was absolutley outrageous that your highway department was so careless with your fence. Maybe you should write a letter to the editor of your local paper.

Talk about stopping one's heart! You must have been a wreck! And then to find out part of your fence was gone?! I'd be a screaming lunatic! Thank God he's safe and secure again. I hope he never gets your heart racing like that again. But then again, that's what boxer's do best. LOL

OMG! So glad that Fred is ok, I would have been a complete wreck.

So the highway department can move private property without prior approval? You can bet that if something had happened to Fred or Lucy, they wouldn't have taken responsibility. How sad.

This is a sad but true happening with these inconsiderate people. I moved my own fence just to appease the meter readers, and behold, what did I see? One morning at home while my car was being repaired, I caught the meter people antagonizing my dogs by jumping at them, spitting at them and using their tire-iron type tool to smack the fence. Then the 2nd guy got out of the truck and pulled out a can of pepper spray, and THAT is when I made my presence known. Luckily not only did I see them, but two of my neighbors did as well. The main culprit ended up getting fired, but the pepper spray guy just got relocated to a different route. And they wondered why my dogs acted so aggressive when they came around? I just can't understand why both weren't fired. Why would you spray a dog who's behind a fence and poses no threat?
