I have a 14 month old female boxer. We have been feeding Candiae since we got her at 8 wks old. But unfortunately we are unable to get the food anymore because the store has switched companies. I live in a fairly small city and my options of good food is VERY limited. So I have been looking at this new food that they are gonna be carrying. I was wondering if I could get some opinions. What do you think? Is it worth feeding? It is around the same price as the candiae. Here is the ingredients list:

Chicken Meal, Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Chicken Fat (preserved with Vitamin E), Whole Oats, Fish Meal, Chicken, Chicken Digest, Pea Fiber, Dried Whole Eggs, Flaxseed, Fish Oil, Dicalcium phosphate, Dried Brewer’s Yeast, Salt, Kelp Meal, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Chicory Root Extract (a source of FOS), Marigold Extract (a source of Lutein), Vitamin C, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Zinc proteinate

Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin K (menadione), Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Niacin, Dicalcium pantothenate, Pyridoxine hydrochloride, Thiamine mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Ferrous Sulphate, Iron proteinate, Manganous oxide, Manganese proteinate, Zinc Sulphate, Copper Sulphate, Copper proteinate, Calcium iodate, Cobalt Proteinate, Beta carotene, Sodium selenite.

Sorry so long!! But thank you in advance.

Nutram is not the worst food around - but it's not that fantastic either. There is only one meat ingredient in the top five. That doesn't guarantee that there's little meat in the food, but the macronutrient breakdown (not posted) doesn't indicate a high meat content either (so together a fairly strong indicator that the major portion of this food is in the grain content). And the only whole grain (as opposed to fractions and floor sweepings) is oats - the fifth ingredient.

Ingredients such as rice flour, chicken digest and pea fibre further indicate a low quality product... and you might want to do a bit of research on the effects of synthetic vitamin K (menadione) before choosing a food that still contains it (much of the pet food industry has "voluntarily" removed this if it was ever used).

What about Canadian brands such as Go! Natural or Orijen? They make some much higher quality products. Is it possible to get those anywhere near you?

Thank you for your information. I find reading the ingredient labels very confusing. Unfortunatly neither of those food brands are sold around here. The only food that is around here is eukanuba, medi-cal, science diet and anything that you can buy at wal-mart. Oh and I think the pet store sells nutriance. Not much of a selection. I was so happy to find someone that sold Candiae and I am so disappointed that i can't get it anymore! I don't know what to do now. It is like trying to find the best of the worst.

Possibly (well, definitely) it's worth taking a look at the websites of food manufacturers that you like. They usually have store locators on them, and if there's nowhere near you, they often sell direct or can point you toward somewhere local that will ship it to you. It would take a little time of internet-trawling, but worth it if you make a good discovery :)

I don't suppose you're thinking of either homecooking or raw feeding? Location matters far less in those circumstances :)

You can buy Fromm Four Star in St. John's and Mt. Pearl according to their website. You can also buy Orijen in Conception Bay. Good luck!

Thank you everyone for all your information. Unfortunately St. John's is a 8 hour drive from me. I did look into shipping the food but it costs double the price to have it shipped. I am gonna have to figure something out.

Hi there,
You would be able to get those brands here in St. John's...
Maybe if there is a pet specialty store in your area they could have it ordered in for you???
May be worth asking at least.
