Howdy

I have a 6 month old boxer - Rusty who has a food allergy. The vet put us on a diet of Venison & Potato food. We are currently attending obedience school and require treats. The vet suggested that I take little bits of the canned food and roll it into balls to use for treats. I am concerned that the treats won't stay good for long and I also need to have long cylindrical treats (think string cheese)that doesn't squish so easily. I have thought about baking or freezing the canned dog food, but I have no experience in the kitchen. Has anyone had a similiar experience or know of any alternative treats made from canned food. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I used to have to make treats for my last dog from canned food. I simply cut the food into the size pieces i needed, put them on a baking tray and cooked them in the oven at 350F for about 15 minutes. It definately doesnt leave a nice smell in the kitchen though. They last about 7 days if refrigerated.

Thanks

Thanks BaxtersMa, I baked the treats last nite and its definitely alot better than trying to give the raw stuff as treats.

Can he eat beef? The best treats I've found for training are freeze-dried beef liver cubes. Vets use these a LOT as they are pretty consistently loved by dogs. They come in cubes about 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch but you can also cut them smaller. And they are dry so they are easily portable for training. Otherwise, maybe you could grind up some of his food with peanut butter so it is like cookie dough consistency, moist enough to "form" but not too sticky to carry around?

My Mack who is very food allergic loves "Buffalo Bites" and liver biscotti, anti allergic. These seem to be the only two treats he can have. You can find both of them by googling them. Every dog is different, but they may be worth a try. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your help and advice. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately the vet said he can't have any treats unless they are made purely out of venison. We've been on this venison and potatoe thing for a week now and there is no improvement, in fact, i think its getting worst. However, I've noticed that the hives are really bad when he has been outside and I'm beginning to think its an outside allergy instead of a food allergy. We go to the vet tomorrow morning and I'm going to see what he says.

At petsmart, they sell yogurt drop treats.... Can he have yogurt? Doja was on a low protein diet and I had a similar problem finding treats, till I found the yogurt ones. They look like hersheys kisses, white chocolate, and she absoluetly loves them.... in a orange little can container, they even have a different flavor, I thinks its chocolate yogurt, I just give the plain white ones..... and theyre small enough that it only takes her a second to mucnh it down
