I feel really bad about this and need some input. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong. Pimp loves being with me, follows me everywhere sits between my legs and sleeps on me whenever I am sitting on the ground. He cries when i go into another room and he cannot follow. I don't think I am babying him too much, I am just trying to comfort him because we have only had him to 5 days. Should I try to seperate myself from him some, should I let him to take naps on my lap? I know boxers are very social dogs and love being around people but I would like to know if I am doing the right thing? All suggestions welcome!!

I had the same issue with Maddox the first couple weeks, I could not leave him anywhere alone including to eat his food. Now I can leave him outside more and he wont cry and keeps himself entertained. I have had him for a month and it seems to enjoy his alone time more each day

I would take full advantage of this bonding time and cuddle him and let him nap on you as much as you have time for! He's a baby and hasn't been away from his litter for long. Training will be easier if you have a strong bond--of course you do have to teach him to be alone and entertain himself, but in my opinion you don't have to work on that much while he is this young.
Soon enough he'll be a little terror and will have no time for sitting still in your lap! At least mine went through that independent puppy phase. Now she's a cuddlebug again though.
Good luck and enjoy your baby!

Thanx for all of the input!! The one thing I try not to due is pick him up alot. He does love sleeping on my lap. I think it is because he needs comfort until he feels secure. Thanx again!!

just a word of advise... my first boxer was that way to. He had to follow me around everywhere I went. I didnt want to be away from me. He ended up having sevier separation anxiety, so bad that he was on medication for a while. I read somewhere that around 3 or 4 months you should start leaving the puppy alone more often so this anxiety doesn't occur. If you do a search on google for separation anxiety it tells you some things to prevent it. It turned out I was home too often (student) and he became overly atatched. But I do highly recommend looking up separation anxiety to learn how to prevent it, because it's very stressful trying to get them better. but like I said, you start trying to get them more independent and not spending too much time with them around 3 months.

carebear - thanks for the information! I will check into that however he seems to be getting better. The first couple day were rough, but he has been staying home by himself for the past couple days. I come home on lunch break for an hour and let him run around. Thankx!!!

sounds like pimp just enjoys getting the lovin' from his master. i don't think there is nothing wrong with bonding with your dog and spending some quality time as long as there is a balance of time when he is left alone. it doesn't necessarily have to be when you are at work. try seperating the time that you spend with him in increments so that he does not get totally overwhelmed. maybe have him lay and sleep with you on the couch for an hour and then place him in his crate for about 10 minutes. them afterwards he can come out and hang out with you again and later he can go back in for 15-20 minutes. keeping a steady balance will help condition him to know that he will get let out of his crate eventually and not to stress about it.
i noticed that you mentioned that things were going pretty well, so i wish you luck.

14 months old with the same behavior

Bea is 14 months old and behave exactly the same way. Is it harder to get rid of this when the dog is older? I am aware that this depends on the family but some of you guys must have seen this on older dogs as well...

When we got Bea, we were told that she was used to be alone but with us she's within a few meters at any given time.

Please excuse my bad english ;)

it sounds as if your dog was alone all the time, she is merely trying to make up for that by spending as much time with you as possible. boxers are not the type of dogs that enjoy being alone. they love being around their families. being close to the family is not a problem, as long as they know that when it's time for you to go, they don't have to worry and that you'll be back. as long as there is a balance you should be fine.
