fluid in the lungs?

This morning our 10 week old puppy started to cough and then had a hard time breathing. Moments later he started to bleed from his mouth. My wife tried to see if something was stuck in his throat but couldnt find anything. He became limp and could barely breath. We rushed him to the vet.

The vet is about 40 minutes away, along the way he stopped breathing a couple of time but after gently shaking him he started up again. At the vet's his body was shutting down and there was barely a heart beat. He was put on oxygen and given a shot to help clear out his lungs. His temp was 92f, and unresponsive except for his eyes. The vet thought we lost him!

A short time later he began to breath better and his heart rate increased, and became a little more responsive. His lungs were filled with blood.

He wasn't choking on anything, the vet doesn't know why his lung would start bleeding like that. The vet thought maybe a blood vessle in the lung spontaniously errupted. Its been about 5 hours since this started and the pup still needs oxygen and there is still fluids in his lungs I'm hoping someone reading this could offer an explaination.

The pup has lots of energy, 10 minutes before he was chasing my youngest child and stealing his sox before school. He's watched all the time, and crated when he can't be.

He ate good last night and drank a lot of water.

We do not have rat poison around the house, nor leave household cleansers lying around.

Has anyone come across this or heard of another? Something I can suggest to the vet to check?

I have a leaky valve that occasionally causes bood to back up into my lungs and my sats to drop. Has your vet ruled out any heart problems? At any rate, I hope this episode turns out to be an isolated incident, and that your furbaby is soon on the road to recovery. Let us know what happens ~ Cathy

I am sorry to say that we lost our sweet puppy Zeus by five o'clock that same evening. Even though there was noticeable improvement soon after the oxygen and IV were administered, he made no further progress. He never reached the point where he could make it without the oxygen. Every time the vet attempted to test him for a few minutes without the oxygen, he quickly went down hill. His lungs continued to bleed throughout the day, and eventually lost the fight.
Although a week has passed, we are still filled with tears and heartache, and have so many unanswered questions. Our vet was not able to pinpoint the cause of the internal bleeding, and ruled the cause of death as undetermined. We contacted the breeder and she spoke with her vet. He seems to think that the most likely cause was some type of poisoning or an injury from a fall or being stepped on. The breeder and her vet claim that it couldn't have been a genetic defect or any other disease or condition. We were very careful with Zeus and treated him like one of our children. He was loved and played with and he had already learned that if he sat at the foot of the rocking chair and whined, he would be rocked to sleep. Also,we do not have rat poison in or near our house, and all cleaners are kept on the top shelf in a closet. And if he had been stepped on or injured he would have been brought to the vet immediately.
At the time of death, our vet gave us the option to have him sent in for an ecropsy, but we chose not to do so. He told us that we could not be guaranteed an answer, and it would have cost about $200. We already had a lot of money invested, between the vet bill, the purchase of the puppy, and all other expenses, not to mention it being Christmas time. But now that it is too late, I think it would have been worth it to find some answers. I didn't realize that it would be so difficult to accept the fact that the causes were undetermined, with the main possible cause being something that we strongly feel was not a possibility.
If anyone has any suggestions for us please, please let us know. We would greatly appreciate some ideas as to what might have caused this. Although we know answers can't bring Zeus back, it would ease our minds to know that there are possible causes that we had no controll over.

I am so sorry to hear that Zeus didn't pull through. It's so hard not knowing what the cause is. I can't think of anything that would cause such a sudden onset of something so severe. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I am so deeply sorry for poor Zeus. How absolutely heartbreaking, especially to not know how or why he died. I think I would have to pursue this with the breeder if you are sure nothing happened to him. I would think if he got poisoned or some type of injury then it would have been more gradual versus playing one minute and coughing up blood the next.
