Boxer Buddy
I am originally from NY so my knowledge of what can hurt my boxer is limited to the easily googleable. I know there are a few other members who are Florida residents themselves.

I have a concern.

My dog, like all boxers, is incredibly inquisitive. He is not regularly, if ever, left unattended outside but even while on a leash, or when monitored, I've experienced some pretty close calls. One time, he pawed a red and white caterpillar and stuck his face too close and wound up gagging and frothing at the mouth and licking his lips for almost an hour. I saw that but didn't know the bug was dangerous.

Most recently, however, I was taking him out to go potty and he stuck his face in the grass for only a second as if he went after something but he didn't pick anything up. I thought it was the spikey grass he found offensive and was just investigating. He came inside and kept crying at the door and all of a sudden began to gag. I took him outside and he frothed at the mouth for about ten minutes. Then, it was over and he was fine. It really scared me.

This is not an illness issue. This is an exposure/toxin issue. I'm lucky he's not been made more sick but I don't even know what to look out for. There is a lot of talk about cane toads but I have only seen very, very tiny frogs that come out after rain and snails around my house. I'm not sure what is causing this and what to do when this happens. It mostly seems to resolve itself but it looks so serious in the moment, I don't know when I should get him to the vet or if it will pass. It's very frightening. Anyone have any advice? Anyone know anything to specifically look out for other than the enormous cane toad?

I grew up in central Fl and I know there is a multitude of things out there. Watch out for the blue skinks with the lines down there backs. My cats loved those things and they would always cause a problem. As for plants the list is really long, azaleas, bird of paradise, and some oranges are all common in FL and all are toxic. I would call your vet and ask what could be causing it in your area. I'm sure your dog isn't the only one running into problems. He/she can give you a better idea of what to look out for. Also they might be able to tell you something you can do when it happens to lessen the severity or let you know when you should be rushing your dog to the vet. It's just a phone call and those are free.

I am also in FL and curious about the bug issue. Nina did get into an elephant ear bush and chew up a stalk once. Turns out, they're poisonous to dogs. She threw up and foamed. I called my vet, and he advised flushing her mouth for 5 minutes with a hose. Needless to say, that was traumatizing for us both. Stay away from them for sure.
We also have had to spray for ants. There are many varieties here that can hurt a dog. Make sure you use a pet-friendly spray, and After spraying don't let your dog in the area for a few hours til it dries.
