Floppy ear question

Hi All, I've haven't been on the boards in a while. We just rescued a female floppy eared brindle. I am used to cropped ears with Oskar. My question is the bottom edges of the insides of Stella's ears looked "chewed up" when we were out for a walk yesterday she was shaking her head (we live in NY cold snow was flying) I noticed when we got home the "chewed up" areas were bleeding a bit. I put neosporin on them and they stopped. Is ithis normal for floppies? Anyone else experience this? Thanks!

I certainly wouldn't say that it is normal. I happened one year with Moto's ears. I'm not sure what started it, though I wonder if it was a touch of frostbite. It took forever to get them to heal, but they finally did. It hasn't happened since.

I would try and stop him from shaking his head. Maybe try putting a head band over his ears.

if she is shaking her head that normally is a sign of infection, and her chewed up ears could be from her scratching them. I would take her to the vet and get her look at.

My neighbor had a dog with chewed up ears from fly bites and they are still scarred! The dog was tied to a dog house his entire life until someone called the humane soceity...they took the dog but brought the poor thing back a few months later:(

Same as the above, I have heard of that happening from being left outside and bitten by flies. Definitely not normal for floppies. :(

Not normal!!! Mine have floppy ears and do not look chewed up or bleed. I would get the pup checked out. :(

Thanks for the replies. She def. does not have an infection. Her ears are nice a pink, no smell and she is not scratchig at them. I am wondering if the previous owners had her in a crate that was too small and if she did shake her head her ears would hit the crate. Or the possibility of being outside and getting bit may make sense. I'll keep a watch on them and hopefully she will be fine
