Last week I had Chevy's ears cropped, they weren't very long because the vet said we waited too late. He did not keep the tape on, he just bloodied them getting them off. We tried to retape ourselves with no luck-biting occured. Took him back to the vet yesterday, he taped them very well and it took him 30 minutes to get the tape off. Wrapped again, it took an hour to get it off. It makes him crazy! If I leave the tape off until they heal on the edges, then could I try again or will they eventually stand on their own? The vet said they would, he does a lot of Great Danes that stand later.

Yes, you can let them heal first then re-tape. The last dog we had cropped didn't have his ears posted until the stitches were removed and the ears fully healed.

When I had Roxy's ears cropped we waited until her ears were healed and the stitches were out before we began the posting and taping process. I would recommend this. Pulling the tape off of unhealed ears sounds extremely painful and unnecessary. If the ears are not very long it shouldn't take too long to get them to stand either.
I think my vet is not too up on the boxer ears. I felt so bad about the whole experience that I would never crop again. Too much pain for a little puppy that I induced. I was wondering how to get your picture on the post and what are the paw prints for. Sorry, I am just new to the forum page.

I'm sorry to hear that you didnt have a good experience with your vet. Before cropping my dogs ears I researched vets in the area that do cropping and asked each one for photos of their past jobs and talked to each one for a while before making my decision. Whether you end up with a good crop greatly depends on your vet. My vet actually stitched a little "cast" of sorts onto Roxys ears so the would be propped up but not taped while they were healing. When her ears were healed and the stiches were taken out, the casts were removed also. I also made sure I found a vet that would help me with the aftercare and taping of the ears because I had no idea how to tape a dogs ears and I wanted them to turn out. The cropping was only bothersome to Roxy for a couple of days and of course she didnt really like the tapings but she never seemed to be in pain and she made it through no worse for wear.

You might want to check with another vet more experienced in ear cropping to get his opinion. When Scrapper was cropped, for about 10 days, his ears were attached to a little cone-type contraption on top of his head. We didn't start the taping until the stitches were out and the cone was removed, which my vet did under anesthesia so as to not hurt Scrapper and be able to take his time and get all the Skin-Bond off. He used isoflourane and just put him lightly under and woke him right up but it was much less traumatic for Scrapper to have the stitches removed that way. My breeder showed me how to tape his ears and helped me with the first few tape changes until we got the hang of it.

This is a perfect reason why some vets have no business cropping ears. Some just don't know what they are doing.
I would let little Chevy's ears heal. Don't worry about any taping until they are all healed. You can use some antibiotic ointment on the edges to keep scabs from forming and help them heal faster. He will enjoy the gentle rubbing. And it will be good for him to have some positive touches after two painful tapings.
Can you ask around and try to find a breeder to help you tape them later? Do expect to pay them for their supplies and time, although I am sure it won't be much. It doesn't have to be a boxer breeder. Dobes & Danes all tape the same way. Just tell whoever is helping that he won't tolerate posts in the ears. Some pups just will not tolerate having the ears posted. I have two older pups whose ears are pretty well up. One would not tolerate anything down her ears and the other didn't care at all. They are all different and there are many, many different methods of taping.
To be honest I can't imagine a Dane's ears standing "all by themselves" without taping.
One other note. Please don't try to tape them yourselves. You really can do some damage, if the tape is on wrong or too tight.
Hang in there, it will get better. Give Chevy a big hug and some special treats. He will forget this experience.

There is an age limit and it is pretty quick. The reason being the cartilidge forms as the puppy matures. You want to crop the ears before the cartilidge forms so you can train them to stand. And unless you crop them to a pit bull crop, there usually will be some taping involved.
And I echo Cheryl's thoughts. I have never heard of a Dane's ear standing without being taped. I am sorry to say I am less than impressed with this vet :( And yes, please do allow 10 days for the sutures to heal before covering them up with tape. Don't let the puppy dig at the sutures.

Sounds like common sense to me but naturally I relied on my vet to be the expert, as he has done many ears before(???). I had them cropped at 11 weeks and he taped them but left them apart and they kinda flopped to the side. My daughter and I pulled them together and taped that. Also they were not stitched, he said they would heal fine. He gave me some cream to put on them and they are healing but still look pretty sore and the tips flop over.
