My 6 month old has skin allergies, but she has tested positive to being allergic to all 6 white fish tested, plus salmon, so we have had to discontinue the Omega 3 fish oil supplements that we were giving her.

Has anyone used flax seed oil as an alternative ? I know it's a source of Omega 3 in humans, and I can get Omega 3 flax seed oil capsules .... but don't know if dogs can tolerate or metabolise it ..... or the correct dose.

Thanks for any input on this.

Hi Jinny - Tucker tested allergy-positive to all fish as well. His allergy testing panel included flax & he is negative to that. My vet suggested that I try to find & use flax oil & I have been doing so since last September. I give him 5 mL in his food twice daily. I started by giving him a product that PetSmart had available & that dose was 5 mL for every 20 lbs per day. I can't always find that product on the shelf, however, so I found an organic flax seed oil at a local pharmacy & have been giving that. No problems to speak of - he will even lick the spoon before he goes after his food.

I made the mistake of getting a bottle of what was mostly flax at another pet store here that had cod liver oil fairly far down on he ingredient list... bad move, as he had an impressive flare-up. I definitely felt like the worst "mom" on the planet.

Thanks Cindy ... this is great info. They didn't test for flax, but I think I will take a chance and try her with it.

....... and you are"The Best Mom", as you were just trying to help your boy :)

I know there are some on here that use evening primrose oil.... when I was new to supplements and Arabella was going through immunity issues , that was one that was recommended :)

Thanks Erin ... she is already on Evening Primrose, recommended by her vet ... but I thought that is because it contains GLA, which is good for healthy skin and hair. Which when I think about it, is why she was taking the Omega 3 fish oils.

Now I am all confused - Is the Evening Primrose oil to replace the Omega 3, and so she doesn't need both ?

Now that my brain has finally slipped into gear, I can answer my own question ! The vet definitely told me that she should take both Evening Primrose plus Omega 3 fish oil, except that in Luna's case, she can't have the latter.

So, does anyone know of any contra-indication for taking both Flax seed and Eve Primrose ?

Evening Primrose has Omega-6, but not much in the way of Omega-3. So the recommendation to also take another source generally high in Omega-3 makes sense. The fllax oil that I found has Omega-3, Omega-9 and Omega-6.

Sorry - I hit submit reply too fast... I checked a drug interaction data base & didn't find any interactions between EPO & flaxseed oil.
