Fixation with smells

does anyone else have a baby that is fixated with smells? my Annie is infatuated with things that smell flowery. when I wash my hair... she buries her nose in it. new bodysoap or lotions...she just sits there and sniffs at me (for hours sometimes). CANDLES - omg - she LOVES them.... to the point of coming into my kitchen and finding a 70 pound dog with her face buried into a candle on my table just stiffing it (she looks at me - wiggles her butt and goes back to sniffing it ----- knowing she is NOT ALLOWED up there)...... She pulls the fabric softner sheets out of the barrel and puts them on her comforter and just lays there smelling it. and of course not to mention ANY Flowers she can find... she will stand on her hind legs to get closer when my kids pick flowers for me and i put them on my entertainment center.

Hazel just looks at her and walks away - doesn't seem to have the same fixation.

I myself think its a bit unusual... I know dogs are scent orientated but I think she goes to extremes "stopping to smell the roses".

Yes, Deeg loves the smell of material; it is so crazy. He pushes his nose into anything that is made out of material and smells away. My friends tease me that he and I are so much alike as I collect clothes...I use to own a clothing store.

My female Marine is just a smelling machine. It doesn't matter what it is she just loves to smell everything. I often tell my husband we should have trained her in tracking because I think she was a Bloodhound in a previous life. Sometimes I call her Marine McGruff (The Crime Dog). I think the funniest times are when I put my makeup on before work. She insists on sitting on my lap while I do it and smelling everything I use. I have to watch when I use a certain lipstick because it smells like berries and she tries to stick her nose right in my mouth. She is a great hide and seek player because of this also. What nuts we have with their little quirks.

Smell machine

Sherlock is just a giant nose on 4 legs. I got a sample of organic fertilizer and was using it when I realized that Sherlock was literally digging his nose into the plants that I was pouring it on. It has Bat guano in it. He was in smell heaven!!!! He has to sample everything.

my dogs are obsessed with lotion and try to lick it off whenever they can!! and those fabric softener sheets... they go nuts for them and i always have to make sure that i don't throw them out in the house or i'll find the pups in the garbage!!

sounds as if you might have a good detection or search and resue dog in your hands.

thanks for the responses... My Annie also loves LOTION of all kinds... Hazel just seems to like my Hawiian Tropics. Both of my girls love fruit and fruity smelling stuff.

Annie does have one other strange trait - she is addicted to breath mints (yeah - that's right). Her FAVORITE is WINTERFROST ECLIPSE. I accidentally left the tin out on the coffee table one night and she tried to eat through it to get to them. She comes running when I take out the container and will sit there drooling until I give her one.

It's nice cause she has the freshest breath....she ACTUALLY SUCKS on them... doesn't just swallow them or chew them... she runs it up and down her tongue and sucks on it for a few minutes.

Because of her LOVE OF GOOD SMELLING STUFF - she found a mint that I dropped and ate it... and has loved them since.

FUNNY TOO, she doesn't have smelly gas - just loud air. To the point, that if one of my kids pass gas with smell...she actually wrinkles up her nose (almost looking offended) and walks away.

Guess it's just "pretty and tasty" smells she likes.

i'm not sure if giving them human breath mints is such a good idea. there might be ingredients used in them that could cause them harm.
if she simply won't leave you alone when seeing the container, try swapping some of the breath mints for some doggie treats instead.

I've tried doggie treats and mint flavored dog stuff.... NOT the same, at least as far as she is concerned. she got the first one by mistake - actually - i think it was on purpose (for her) - she barked and i jumped (startled - becuase she usually didn't bark for no apparent reason) and a dropped the mint I was going to put in my mouth... I couldn't find it quick enough - but she did.

I should say - she doesn't get them often - but now that she know what they are - I have to keep CLOSE EYE on them to keep her from getting them.

will try to look further into the ingredients to make sure they won't harm her... thanks for the comment - wouldn't have thought of mints being harmful.
