Fishy Breath - The Food?

We've noticed Punchinella's breath has recently had a sort of "fishy" odor to it. We recently changed foods; we're now using Canidae. Could this be the cause? We have pet toothpaste and we try and brush her teeth as often as possibe - usually a few times per week. The odor seems to be most noticeable first thing in the morning. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Oh, I noticed yesterday, even after playing at the dog park, she didn't drink much water. Could she possibly not be getting enough liquids and that be causing the smell?

Well while I don't know the answer to this, what I can tell you is Josi also has terrible fishy morning breath too. We also brush her teeth a few times a week, but it doesn't stop her hot breath in the mornings. I'm sure getting her to drink more water can only help flush out the bacteria in the gums, but Punchinella is also still a baby i think and they tend to have stankier breath anyway. I think as long as you are brushing her teeth and you don't see any gum infections or absyss I would assume this is normal, just not pleasant when she lick attacks you:)

Bacon has fishy breath and he eats Chicken Soup. It's awful. I haven't gotten to brushing his teeth yet, but he'll need it.

We also give her California Natural Health Bars. I found this on another thread:

We feed him California Natural Sweet Potato and Herring. Beau has done very well on this food. It costs about the same as Canidae. The only downfall is that it smells like fish food!

Hmmmm, maybe that's it?

Lucy has this awful breath too! I wouldn't say it's fishy though, more like urine breath. It's just terrible. We give her lots of water, but I'm wondering if it has something to do with the heat. It wasn't as hot yesterday as it's been and it didn't seem as strong last night.

Probably the food!

We give Cooper California Natural fish and potato and his breath is horribly fishy! People always comment on it (poor guy) but I guess we have just gotten used to it. I haven't found that brushing or more water has really helped... but this food agrees with his stomach so we will stick with it and deal with the smell :)

I would say its normal for this food. (It started when we upgraded to CS) Not lovely smelling...but normal.

If this odor is all the time and gets worse I would let the vet have a look. Breath odor is sometimes the first symptom of something else going on. How old is your dog? Teething can cause awful breath too.
