Elli's Dad

OK so I dropped Elli off this morning to get her ears re-taped, and i go to class like normal. Then when i am sitting in class my phone rings and its the Vets number but i was not able to pick it up. When i got out of class i ckecked my voicemail and the Doc. told me to call her back when i have a chance. So i call her back and she says this: "This is the first time in 16 years that i have done a ear crop that i am not satisfied with. The ear tips are not even (on fatter than the other)" ( she was a referal by nearly 10 people) She goes on to say that she wants to fix it free of charge of course but Elli would have to be put to sleep again. She says i can either have it fixed when Elli goes under to get spayed (in a month and a half) or we can do it as two different procedures or we could just leave the ears how they are. After she had her ears cropped initially my view on ear cropping changed becasue the first night was a nightmare for both of us i am sure ( after the first day we have never had a problem). My question is what should i do???

Well at least the vet is honest. I would wait and see how they look now. If you are not satisfied then get them repaired when the spay procedure is done....just my two cents worth.

Sascha has floppy ears, so I don't have any experience in this area, but I would say either have it fixed along with her spay, or leave them as they are. I just think the physical risks and stress that a second surgery would cause Elli wouldn't be worth it. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

If you are planning on having them redone then I too would do it at the time of the spay. (But is a month too long to wait to have them redone?) It has been a very long time (about 18 years) since anyone in my family has cropped a boxer's ears. The last time we too had a bad experience and had to have the ears redone. It was horrible and was very hard on him. Ever since we have refused to do it (although all of our boxers since then have been rescues and have been older). I have found that a lot of vets are now refusing to do ear crops. I live in a very large city (San Antonio) and there is only one vet here that will do them (but they do at least one per day). I would see how bad her ears are and definately consider whether it is worth it to put her through all that again. I would also ask the vet many questions about the risks of waiting another month to fix it, if that's what you are planning to do. (i.e. Will it affect how they stand, heal, etc.? Will the surgery be more involved since she's already had it done once before and begun to heal? Will she be too old at the time of spay for the corrective surgery to do any good? etc.) Good luck with your decision and I hope all goes well for Elli.

My first reaction is anger that she screwed up. But when she's agreed and offered to fix it, it should be ok. As far as being put under again, I agree with you. But when Drake had stitches removed from Histo's, he had to be put under, again. I was there and it was frightening. The first thing that scared me was when the vet tech actually "jostled" him and tried to get him to breathe. So my best wishes are with you and make sure to remind the vet to use NO ACE!

My first reaction would also be anger. What if she isn't satisfied with the spay, silly I know but...

Oh my! Are you furious! Scared? I am so sorry you have to go through this, and that poor baby! Makes you want to give the vet a ear job. I hope you can work something out. My question would be if they didn't like the way it was why didn't they pay better attention and fix it while the dog was asleep the first time! I love the way the cropped ears look but I don't have the guts to do it to mine. Good luck.

I wouldn't be too upset with the vet. Over the years I have found that there are times that the ears can actually be at different growth stages at the time of the cropping. I mark my own ears and my latest pup had ears that were exactly the same at the time of cropping. At about four months of age, one ear was a good 1/2 inch shorter than the other. Of course I was not pleased, but this was not the vets fault. My pup is now a little over six months old and the ears have caught up with each other and are again the same size.

I would wait and see what they do and then if there is a marked difference that bothers you, you get the one redone at the time of the spay.

I think I would wait and see. The ears may not be so different that they bother you. I certainly wouldn't have it done right away.

Jackie dosen't have her ears cropped and basically this is the reason why, I'm glad we didn't do it. If I were in your case I would defently be mad, but wait and see how they look and if they're that bad then get them done when you get her spayed. Poor baby.
