We just took possession of an almost six week old boxer from a family today who had a litter of six. We noticed he was very timid...we stopped by PetSmart and got the essentials, and when arriving at home noticed that he had lice. He has not been to the vet yet, which means he has not had his shots, or anything else taken care of. We are a bit worried about him. Any suggestions until Monday? He wimpers frequently...and does not seem playful at all.

Any help and suggestions is appreciated.

I would definitely be worried as well :( Puppies should not be seperated from their littermates until at least 8 weeks of age. Weeks 6-8 are extremely important for them to learn socialization, bite inhibition and many other invaluable skills. Any chance you can take him back for another couple of weeks?

Incidentally, you need to post your Introduction. This is something required of all new members, and should actually have been your first post ;)

Bret - I think you should take that little one to a vet quickly. Whimpering and lethargy is not a good sign. And if this pup has had no shots, then he's extremely vulnerable to things like parvovirus - and that can be fatal. Take him to the vet today.

Ty and I are sending lots of good vibes to your new baby. Did you get him to a vet? I hope he's doing okay. Please keep us posted on your little man!

Re: The Vet

We have not been able to get him to a vet as of yet...They were all closed by the time we arrived home, and none of them are open until Monday at 8AM. He has been eating pretty well, and has gone to the bathroom fairly regularly for us. At time he has played with his new toy, and chased his tail, but for the most part has been lethargic and sleepy. I am worried about the lice as well.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Update on Smoke...

...or should we call HER Indy! Yep, it's not a boy, but a girl. First of all, it was not lice afterall, it was FLEAS! In Utah, they are extremely rare, but the poor girl has them. Also, she has a terrible case of worms...So the Animal ER doc gave her the first round of dewormer, and gave us a flea comb to begin the healing process. We are suppose to visit a regular Vet in 2 weeks for her 2nd round of dewormer, and to get her shots. They also did some light blood work, and everything looked good.

SO! With some TLC and time, INDY should be fine!

Thanks for all the concern, and we will keep you updated!
