My husband and I just got a one year old boxer, Duke. I have owned many dogs before I got married, but never a boxer. When we decided to get a dog of our own, now that we have the room, we read about EVERY breed possible, and kept coming back to the boxer. Since we have a 7 mos old daughter, we wanted a dog that is great/reliable with kids and protective. Well, coincidentally, the couple across the street from us had a boxer and a mastiff. Since one was male and one was female, and neither one of them were fixed, gee, I wonder what problems they started having. Since they didn't want to deal with the fighting that started occurring due to certain tension, they told us they were either going to take their boxer to the pound, or shoot him. Yes, they said they would shoot him. I begged them to hold on to him until my husband got home from work so I could talk to him about taking him home with us. When we went to meet him, it was everything I could do to hold back my tears. He had rarely been taken out of the backyard, had no collar, no vaccs since his puppy rounds (and he is just over one year old) not neutered, his ears had been cropped but not cared for, so each ear flops over and lays on top of his head, had scabs and his neck and head from where the mastiff got the best of him, and we could see almost every bone is his body. The owners told us the mastiff would only let him eat about half of the time, and when he did eat, he ate so fast that he would vomit afterward. He had also never been bathed or brushed, and the inside of his poor ears were absolutely filthy.

We put a collar and leash on him, introduced him to our little girl, and it was love at first sight. We took him home that day, and he has never looked back. He is just relishing in his daily walks and romps in the park, regular baths and brushings, and is loving the indoor life and all the love and attention he is spoiled with. We got him vaccinated right away, and although we have only had him a few weeks, he has really put on weight, and is just a beautiful big boxer boy. He is brindle with a white chest and belly, and four white paws, and black mask.

He and our daughter have become the best of friends. He is surprisingly mellow for a boxer pup, and is very gentle with her. He loves giving her soft kisses and follows her around everywhere. She just loves crawling all over him, and he just lets her do whatever she wants to him. He is just the biggest lover. He is such an obedient, funny, affectionate, reliable, loyal dog. And everyone we talk to with boxers says the same things.

My husband and I swear we will never get another breed. We are absolutely sold on boxers and couldn't be happier. They are the BEST! In fact, at this very moment my daughter and her Duke are snuggling together on the floor. They are just way too cute together.

Thanks for listening to me ramble all you other boxer lovers. If anyone has any cute or funny stories about boxers with your children, I would love to hear them. I stay at home all day, so I have all the time in the world to enjoy your stories.

Thanks,

What a wonderful story! Welcome to Boxerworld... If you look in The Boxer Ring forum, there is a post there about rescuing a dog versus buying one. Please share your experience there too! I know Duke is profoundly grateful for your kindness. Also, there's a whole forum dedicated to boxers and children, just so you know.

What you may consider "rambling" sounds more like "music to our ears."

Duke is one lucky dog. It sounds like he was living in some awfully ugly conditions. You've done a great thing in adopting him. I've gotta believe he thinks he has just crossed the street from Hell and ended up in Heaven!

Great story. Good luck to all of you.

Bob.

Welcome to BW! I'm so glad this special boy got a second chance at life - you are wonderful for taking him in and giving him the love and attention he deserved. I volunteer with a boxer rescue group and it always amazes me to see how so many of these dogs are still so sweet after being neglected or abused.

I am so happy you found Duke and saved him from what could have been death at the hands of the people who are suppose to love him. I can't imagine shooting an animal because you don't want it around much less a boxer. The thought breaks my heart. I look at my baby Bugzy's face and just melt. Some people are just sick. Enough of my ranting... I truly think you made the best decision. You couldn't have found a better dog for your daughter and better yet you gave a doomed dog a wonderful home. The rewards are endless. Take care and keep us posted!
