First time boarding

We went away for a long weekend and went with my inlaws, who are usually are puupy sitter...so we had to board Sadie at the vets for the very first time! She was there with my inlaws dog, but when I went to pick her up first thing Monday morning (they said I could get her at 7:00, I was there at 7:02!), she was so mad at me. She would not even look at me when I put her in the car. Not only was she mad, but she didn't look like she ate anything for the three days that she was there, it made me sick. We could very clearly see her ribs, her hip bones and her spine! She weighed 43 lbs when we dropped her off and she weighed 40.5 lbs when I picked her up! My poor baby. The first thing that she did when we got home was drink a lot of water and then she ate an entire bowl of food...the amount that she usually eats in one day. Then the rest of the day she slept all day and made me wonder if I picked up the same dog we dropped off. My thought is that she never slept because of all the other dogs barking and crying and she usually won't eat in a strange place right away, but aparently she didn't want to eat at all. The good news is, she is back to her oldself today, not mad at us anymore and is still eating like a pig.

Do any of you have similar stories to that? Needless to say we will never board her again!

We had the same problem when we boarded Zeus a few years ago. He barely ate a thing when he was boarded. I think we where gone for 10 days. He was very upset with us for leaving him. After a few days he was back to his old self. We also decieded that we wouldnt board our pets again if we didnt have too. We either take them with us or they stay with a friend.

We had a horrible experience boarding our dogs; at the time we just had Buster and Isis, so we made sure they had a kennel together. I thoroughly checked this place out before we even considered boarding them there, apparently that's not enough, if I would have had one of those "nanny cams" I would have cut our vacation short and been home instantly!! This woman had Buster out in the middle of a snow storm with a hose rinsing him off (we showed up early to pick them up) and I was furious!! What was she thinking!! Turns out the dog in the kennel next to them was peeing on Buster when he was asleep, he's deaf but I'm sure that woke him up! :( She was trying to get him cleaned up before we picked him up. They didn't eat any of their food, she didn't bother to give them the blanket we brought for them because she didn't want to have to clean it. This woman had a grooming area attached along with the kennel but she said she didn't want to have to charge us for giving him a bath...????!!!!
I didn't know wether to scream or cry!! here was my baby shaking all over cuz he was freezing to death and I just wanted to punch her!!!
Needless to say we have my mom come over and take care of them if we go anywhere. They absolutley LOVE Grandma!! They all get so excited when she comes over, it's such a relief knowing that my babies are being taken care of by someone who loves them just as much as I do.

I boarded my mini dachshund one time. When I went to get him he was soaked because he had peed in his crate overnight and they had given him a bath. He was shivering and more than excited to see me. The thought of him sitting in his urine all night really upset me because the only time he ever pees in his crate is when he is really anxious. Since then, I have had a dog sitter. I have 3 (2 of whom are family members) and I know all of them love my babies and treat them well. There are listings in the yellow pages for dog sitters. They may be more expensive, but at least you know that your pups are not up all night listening to barking or sitting in pee all night!

Depressed

We had the depressed dog. When we p/u Buddy from the kennel, I swear the poor guy hadn’t slept for a week. He feel asleep the second he jumped into the car. He moped around the house for a week, thinking we were going to leave again. I found another kennel that will let us bring the dog in for “day stays” so he can get used to the place before we just leave him for another week. We’ll see how that goes.
