There were two dobies, a sheltie, a golden, a Briard and a grey hound. My male Boxer will be the only Boxer in our county. Tonight was my come and watch visit. It was amazing. I visit my Oma at this place every week and Never have I seen these people react like this. The power these animals have to make these people smile. You see faces light up! We were there for an hour and lost the golden and her handler. When we all met up she said that a women had asked her to please go into her Dad's room. He had just recently had a stroke, stared straight ahead and never talked but would love to see the golden. She said that he reached his hand out through the bars of the bed and felt all over the golden's head and SAID "how much does he weigh?" The daughter was shocked because he had not talked. She asked him how many goldens he had owned and he put up three fingers. Just a little bit of the huge reward we get back from the love our animals give. Can't wait to bring the Big guy on his first trip.

what does it take?

We would like to know what steps to take to get our Phoebe to become a therapy dog, she really seems to have a gentle disposition (this is our first boxer, she is 12 weeks old). This is something we would really enjoy doing but we don't know exactly what steps to take along the way. What should we be working on now and is there any group or organization in our area that we should contact to look into it further? Please share your thoughts or experiences.

That is the national site. They will help you contact someone in your area. Basic obedience is really all you need. They were really relaxed last night and I do think a 7th sense kicks in and those dogs know exactly what to do, Socializing your puppy to be around other animals is very important. They were all good, smelled each other but were nice. One dobie wanted to play real bad but he settled down.
I am so glad that some of you are getting interested. They have a canine festival at the mall in August and all the rescues and other groups such as Therapy dogs, canine companions, etc. will be there. It helps to generate interest and public awareness. Go for it!!

Thank you for sharing. I have requested the paperwork to get Baxter certified with the Paws for Health program.

I think he would make an excellent candidate however I hope his blindness does not hinder his chances. I am not sure of the guidelines for this. I think this would be therapy for him as well! I think it's great that you are doing this. How far do you have to travel? This program participates in Richmond which is a little over an hour from us. I wish there was one closer but I haven't had any luck locating one.

Please keep us posted and let us know how he does on his "first day"!!

Aimee, I think he would be wonderful. We have a county wide group and we are at the north end but have a tester in our town. I think from what I understand is that once I am certified I can go on my own except for the Hospital, have to wait six months before you can go there alone. I like going in a group, two dogs were allowed in a room at a time and we split up some to do that. There were many in the activity room and that was fun.
