Finding the right treat

Juno is 8 weeks old and it seems that shes uninterested in any of the treats that I buy for her. We even bought the treats that petsmart uses for their training classes, they call it "puppy crack," the actual brand name escapes me right now however.

My question is, do puppies usually not respond to treats as more adolescent dogs do? Is it an age thing, or them not having experienced many versions of food making it hard for them to figure out a treat from puppy chow?

Since Juno is so uninterested in the treats that we buy, "start early" training like treat after she does her business outside and training her to accept that her crate is a welcoming place is tough.

Is this normal? Will she grow out of this or do we continue to purchase treats until we find her brand?

Can't answer your direct question... but I can say that we've tried several different treats prior to finding what our little girl likes best. I can say my little girl has never like any of the store bought processed crap you can buy a the pet store...

First we stated with cheese... this worked great for a week or so, then she could care less.

We then tried peanut butter... which she was crazy for awhle, but seemed to get borded with it.

We had the same type of response with dehydrated chicken strips and sweet potato (loved at first then bored after a few weeks).

Now we use Orijens Freezed Dried treats and she starts to drool at the sight of them. She's been good with them for about a year now. They are healthy and small enough to control how many she gets without over feeding.

Each dog will be different and you just have to keep searching until you find the right thing. Hotdogs, cheese, Peanut butter seem to be the most common that dogs like.

Treats

Hi, congrats on your puppy! We're bringing home our baby girl tomorrow so we'll be doing the treats with her training asap too. We're also looking for a biscuit at the store(baking doggie treats is also a options with us too). Have you tried pieces of cheese and bits of chicken breast? I'm also going to be incorporation Raw treats such as freeze dried liver, chicken/beef jerky, cheese, and peanut butter. Good Luck!

Thank you, she is flat out AWESOME!

I haven't tried cheese or chicken. I was trying to stay away from house food thinking she would begin to beg at the table if we gave her that stuff.

I guess the search will continue, but thank you for all the "clue-ins" on favorite the household options. I will be sure to try some of those. (As long as we're not giving them to her from the table)

I've read about others giving their pup a really yummy stuffed bone/kong during human dinners to discourage begging while training. So each would have their own and the pup would theoretically pay attention to his portion then taking it away when dinner is done so it would be special dinner time thing regularly.

I'm with you on the no under the table food too! Though my darling is more lenient so I'm sure I'm going to have to watch out for him as well :D

I've never had a problem with my girl begging at the table. She is only feed from her bowl and if given a treat, it is put in the bowl first (except for training treats). Maybe my experience is not normal, but we've given her cheese, hotdogs and peanut butter, yogurt and pumpkin... and she hasn't seem to associate any of that with us eating at the table... of course we don't give her any of those treats while we are at the table and as stated before, if it's not a training treat it goes in the bowl for her to eat.

Yep, shouldn't have an issue with begging at the table as long as she's not fed from the table.

I seem to remember my Juno taking a little while to learn the wonders of treats. She's a complete pig now, so she didn't stay hesitate very long lol. As far as store bought treats, she really liked the Zukes brand and a bag of those is what I kept by the back door for potty training. Hot dogs and cheese are easy and cheap and go over well, too.

All of my dogs have LOVED Buddy Biscuits-especially peanut butter. They are great for training because they are soft so you can break them into small pieces and they are all natural and made in the US. I also used to cook up beef hearts and cut them into into tiny pieces and freeze them. But not too many as they can cause diarrhea if they get too much. They worked great and I used them only in class.

I feed homecooked and raw so the whole people food thing is not an issue for mine. Nysa will lie in her spot and wait for food while we are eating but never begs-I have to say that is one thing that makes me crazy! We taught them all thier "spot" where they stay while we eat. Sometimes Nysa gets up and goes somewhere else-my husband says it is because she eats better than we do anyway  Good luck with pup :)

We used shredded chicken breast for training and thus began The Zs' love affair with chicken. I swear, I could get those two to do anything for a bite of chicken! ;) We have no issues with begging at the table. They sit near us when we eat but they are very polite - if they push it, they have to go into a down and stay, which they don't like to do. For everyday treats, we just run the gamut - usually whatever is on sale! They hate Milk Bones, though, which I thought was odd...

When i brought my Loki home, he wasnt interested in any treats at all either.
It wasnt until about 9-10 weeks that i finally got him interested in anything.

Cheese was a great starter, but he ended up licking it rather than eating it.
He currently LOVES the Zukes naturals, i found them from a recommendation on here.

You can always use his puppy food too, if hes eating that, it is at least a start.
My trainer said the smellier then better on treats.
